ok after reading and watching quite a few horror films and stories myself, I find that the genre is quite sub divided.

so firstly you need to work out where you are going with it. I.e do you want to make this a 'hack and slash' or 'supernatural' theme. from the content you've given you want to take the supernatural road. now HP Lovecraft (who i've been recently reading) wrote quite a few horror stories in the 1920's so much so, that it created a whole mythos, known as the 'cthulhu mythos' (pronounced ku-tu-lu). so if I was looking at going down that road, I would suggest reading a few of his short stories. here is a website that will help you:
http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/index.html

just be careful on that website, this is the complete works of HP Lovecraft which includes his dream cycle as well. may I suggest you start off by reading 'the call of cthulhu', it would be undoubtedly his most famous work. If you are skeptical, keep in mind that many authors of the horror genre have added to this mythos, most notable modern day horror author, Steven King has also written some short stories that pertain to this mythos. this will show you how to add elements of fright via atmosphere to your story, gore is one thing, but the atmosphere will drag your reader or viewer in.

now the element of humour in horror is tricky, the way I see it and someone else may correct me, is that there are two ways to do this. firstly is by adding the comic relief (a guy that has a witty comeback for everything, he could be the overly scared guy or just a down right fool). secondly you can make the scenes so frantically obscene that the reader/viewer is left contemplating what just actually happened, this is like seeing the far fetched kill in a gory slasher flick. this ludicrous kill leaves the reader/viewer with a feeling of 'that is so unbelievably ridiculous' and they laugh at it. now the latter way of doing this ruins the atmosphere of a true horror. this kind of comedy can be seen in the movie 'evil dead', it is kind of a mock on the cthulhu mythos without being too disrespectful, i believe.

hope this has helped.
