In the book, it mentions the ulcer on Winston's ankle. I thought at first it was just a minor detail, but it keeps getting brought up. Is this significant? I was thinking it may be foreshadowing or possibly be a symbol.

Only symbolic of the poor diet and health of even outer party members. It is certainly only minor detail.
