In part 1, chapter 3, Winston dreams of his mother and sister sinking down into a well or grave of some sort and states that "he knew they were down there because he was up here". What does Orwell mean by this?

Metaphor for his mother sacrificing herself, and her daughter, to save Winston, as Orwell describes shortly after.
