I have a few questions on 1984 -- whether they are signifigant or not, I don't know.

First, Why aren't there any churches left? In my interpretation, this is because it destorys diversity and eliminates religious thought. Which would ultimately help the party leaders in eliminating free thought and individualism.

And secondly, Is Big Brother real or just a figure made up as a guide -- as someone/something to keep the Party members in line? Now, I haven't finished the book yet (I'm in Part Two) so I was just curious about this.

Personal opinions and corrections to my interpretations are helpful.

Have a look around some of the threads will help you out, especially the sticky ones at the top of the forum page.

Short answers to your questions:

Churches are always banned by totalitarian regimes - the ruling party cannot have competition for the loyalty of its subjects.

BB is a made up character. O'Brien gives this away when he says that BB will never die. Clearly, there are no immortal people, so the image is just that, an image.
