Like Autumn Leaves Scattered on the Ground

The fallen leaves are skydiving through the emptiness of space,
One last hurrah before they turn to forest carpeting
One wonders if there’s intelligence that makes each one find its place—
Or if random chance places an oak leaf here, a maple there
Colors on the palette, reds and purples, brown and yellow
Make for a delightful decoupage we wade through as we walk
Each sleeping soundly now, curled up against bedfellow
Silence screams volumes in a crunching echo in the woods…
We wonder in the evening beauty what tomorrow may hold,
Will we rain down as leaves do in the autumn air…
Well, we will just have to wait until the end like flower petals unfolds—
But hope that springs within our hearts knows no end at all…

Oh how beautiful! I am completely entranced your words! I haven't read all of the competing poems, but I'm about certain that I would've voted for yours.

It's so wonderful how you can have such rhythm, imagery and truth in your poems, without sounding like some philosophical chatter-box.

It's so hard to quote this without wanting to quote the whole thing!

"Colors on the palette, reds and purples, make for a delightful decoupage,,," I love this poem, and these lines in particular make me think for a moment that I am actually waling through the woods on a glorious fall day.

I knew this was you because you are the sonnet king. I thought to myself that you had really outdone yourself this time. I especially loved these lines.

Well, we will just have to wait until the end like flower petals unfolds—

You painted a picture that looks like my own mountains and this poem held the same wonder and expectation I always feel in the fall. It was a great!

I loved the poem too Pen. I had that in second from the one i voted for. The passage MotherHubbard quoted was the one that really impressed me. :)

It was a really impressive competition. And a lot of fun. We'll need another one soon. :)

While I was not one of your votes, it was a tough choice Pen. Sometimes it just comes down to the mood the reader is in. I think it's a wonderful poem!

Thanks, guys. Yeah, it was one of the most delightful contests I have ever entered. As I never, well, almost never, vote for myself, I pulled for what proved to be the underdog in the contest. Wonderful winning poem, Qimi!

A poem with actual meter and rhyme. For just that alone you should be commended, Pen.

Pen, it's a lovely poem. Beautifully painted. Makes me want to go out and walk in the Ozark woods.
