The website for the US Copyright Office is:

http://www.copyright.gov/

You can find the information there.
If you have other questions after visiting it,
please post them and I'm sure someone
will be able to help you.

And welcome to the forum, by the way.

Hello!
Thanks for replying!
I did find the website of course, i googled first before asking my question.

I was hoping someone could reply with their experiences on how they got their work copyrighted, did you need a lawyer? anything to keep in mind and what to avoid?

And thank you for th welcome!

I've gotten several songs and plays
copyrighted without a lawyer.

The last one, I did by their
E-File process, filling out the info
on their site and submitting
a pdf copy of the work.

You can also download a version
of their copyright request form
and send it through the mail.

You will have wait a while for it to go through
and pay a fee.

There is a specific form for
specific requests: literary, performing arts,
visual arts, sound recording, etc.

It is also unnecessary. Publishers copyright your material as soon as they buy first rights, and you are not anymore protected by a thief registering with the government than you are keeping your own print and digital copies. The chances of someone literally copying your work and getting rich are astronomically small.
