I'm looking for a book about becoming a great man, to get inspired and do great things for people. For example, I read Gandhi's biography and I learned a lot about what greatness is. It doesn't matter if the book you recommend is novel, biography, philosophy book, self-help or whatever. Im just looking for a book about being a great person (HERO!) and living a life of purpose

Thanks

This is one of my favourites. But Sixmith, how did it inspire you, or why do you consider Martin Eden a specimen of heroism..?

Follow the story of Odysseus' son Telemachus in "The Odyssey." It's a great coming to manhood tale.

Try Elmer Gantry by Sinclair Lewis or Babbitt by the same. LOL.

I would recommend you Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man - James Joyce.

Definitely! I'm reading the inexpensive Wordsworth classics edition at the moment, which has excellent notes - just enough, and not too many... Wordsworth are publishing Ulysses in jan 2010 (for £1.99!) If the notes are as good, it should be an interesting read.

I would recommend John Krakauer's "Eiger Dreams." It's a collection of real life accounts in mountaineering; I personally found it very inspiring and instilled in me a goal-driven mind set.
This book particularly affected me as I myself am a mountaineer, albeit not very experienced, and could relate.
