I recently came across a lovely video montage of scenes from the films of Andrei Tarkovsky set to music of J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion... the whole of which I found quite effective:

Are there any classical videos that you have found particularly striking?

Oh hell... let's stick with Tarkovsky... with some of his absolutely magical images wed with the marvelous music of the contemporary composer Arvo Part:

One is struck by the ability of something as abstract as images and music to communicate so much... even if we cannot clearly put our finger on a narrative meaning... even though it may lack any semblance of the narrative that is so important to many literature lovers.

Another intriguing one... an audio-visual cliff notes version of The Magic Flute:

Kubrick was always brilliant in his use of music. Who can forget Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra)? Can anyone ever hear this piece without thinking of the stunning images of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey?

Here's another classic scene... this time from Visconti's Death in Venice... using the Adagietto from Mahler's 5th Symphony:

I think he fits the Onegin perfectly - certainly he has the look for it, and his voice works well - though the sets for this particular production were a little sparse, overall quite effective: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa_13xMhjkg Though, one could argue the closeup on the Ms. Fleming doesn't do the scene justice, as it puts too much of a burden for he to be constantly acting and moving.

Can I cheat a little Luke and post this? It is one of the greatest montages, from one of my favourite ever films, and the music is so evocative, although it's not a "classical" composer as such, in the strict sense of the word, but one of the greatest composers ever for films. Enjoy.
