I am in need of a list of books that would be considered books of "literary merit" for my AP English class. I am a Senior male that really is not able to sit and read a book that does not hold my attention. Please give me some suggestions!!!

Oedipus Rex by Sophocles
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

I think these would be thrilling, shocking, and thought provoking for a young man. Here is a great list and you will find plenty there to enjoy.

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, it's a short easy read about the baffling non-aggressive nature of the Cold War. It's perfect for a high school senior with a short attention span.

Yeah, and Ulysses too - it's perhaps the most brilliant tragic novel about mariners ever written - full of monsters and pirates and Phoenicians - it has everything. It's probably the best light read ever written.

Seriously though, just try and get a good range of texts - don't get them all on the same theme, or from the same period, or from authors of the same background.

Keep your irony monitor tuned in this forum :D Actually War & Peace isn't that difficult. Tostoy is a lot easier to read than many other novelists. Motherhubbard makes some good, serious, recommendations. Add "The Cossacks" by Leo Tolstoy - that *is* a short, easy read. If you like that you might feel inclined to try War & Peace...

If I may ask, what kind stories do hold your attention? Based on your user name, I assume that you like sports. If so, you might give Bernard Malamud's The Natural a try. If westerns are your thing, try Shane by Jack Schaefer. This book practically sets the archetype for the American cowboy (as depicted in that lesser media, film).

Good searching!
