They were here yesterday;
twig-boned birds who looted beetles
from bark and limbs.

You watched them,
though with a frown by the pond
as your eyes thieved
the day's strained light.

I focused on the kinglets,
tried to see their crowns
as you left with an aura
hard as petrified wood,

and the birds calmed to preen
as the blades of grass
you stood upon raised up
for no apparent reason.

is the grass the hope of the one left behind, to rise again? was she a thief of hearts? i liked, "as your eyes thieved the day's strained light." never thought light could strain. seems as if everything is straining here.
