I just thought I had to tell everyone about this amazing series. I just finished the first book, and am working on the second. I find myself wanting to read it every free second i have. The book is about a place called Panem(a country risen from the ashes of America), that has a game called the Hunger Games every year. A boy and girl are each chosen from each district(there are 12) and have to fight to the death, as punishment for a revolution led by the people of Panem many years ago. The novel follows a girl named Katniss through her experience in the games. The book is well writted and captivating. I think everyone should read it. :)

Sounds morbid; shocking too. It reminds me of a short story called Lottery, but unfortunately I cannot remember who wrote it. Who wrote the Hunger Games? I might look it up online. Always looking for new books to try.;)

the author is Suzanne Collins. I didn't think I would like it because I'm not into violence in books, but I am now obsessed with it.

I didn't think I'd like it either, but when I found it at the library I thought I might give it a try and now I've got both The Hunger Games and Catching Fire on my bookshelf :)

The book isn't really a bloodbath, it's a story about survival.

The Hunger Games was a great book. The author Suzanne Collins created a really realistic picture of this Panem and the struggles that the everyday people went through. The main Character Katniss Everdeen's sister Prim is selected for the Hunger Games and because of her youth and inability to protect herself Katniss sacrificed herself in her sister’s place. The boy from her district was Peeta Mellark. While being interviewed for the Games he admits that he has always had a crush on Katniss. This enrages Katniss but her mentor Haymitch soon helps her realize that it is part of a strategy and that she needs to play along. During the games the gamemaker changes the rules so that the boy and girl from the same district can both survive together. Katniss finds Peeta right away and nurses him to health because he had been injured earlier in the games. Once they are the last two left, the gamemakers come back and give the news that they have changed the rules back to one survivor. This is a huge problem because at this point Katniss believes that she loves Peeta so they both agree on eating poison berries. Before they can eat them the gamemakers stop them let them both live. When they arrive home they realize that they have caused a big problem.

I found it quite entertaining.

That's exactly what it is. Not bad, not great, but adequately written entertainment.

The movie's good, I haven't read the book, though. I think I might as well read it now, reading your thoughts and all.

If I could I would laugh right in your face.

But seriously, however in the world was that vulgar Harry Potter published. Witches, wizards, Hogwarts? A disgrace to the blood stained name of Jesus Christ.

I understand from my granddaughter that The Hunger Games is very good and as she is thirteen her judgement is still unimpaired. Now an excellent "children's" book is The Death-Defying Pepper Roux

Hunger Games is a great book. Just because it isn't difficult to read doesn't mean it's poor writing. Not every writer should write like Faulkner or Joyce

It's a decent book, but it's not the amazing novel some people make it out to be.

I just finished read the series and like kelby_lake I enjoyed it. I am not sure I would let someone under 12 read it though.

It reminds me of a short story called Lottery, but unfortunately I cannot remember who wrote it.

That would be Shirley Jackson, author of the ghost classic The Haunting of Hill House, which Robert Wise made into the equally classic film The Haunting. (Note: Do not confuse with the more recent remake.) Both are very highly recommended if you like spook stories.
