When writing an essay that requires sourced material, how do you navigate all the scholarship out there? My essay is dealing with the effect of place in a certain book, but it's not easy to find scholarship on place in this book. I can find scholarship for other ideas, though. So how do I take general scholarship and apply it to my book? How could I use material from a very broad essay, like "Place in Literature" or "The Effect of Place on Identity"? These are not actual articles, just the kind of general articles I mean rather than, "The Effect of Place on Identity in 19th Century Works". Does this make any sense? HA!

Um, well, you quote the work in the biblio, and you indicate the specific part you've used in your paper in footnotes or the notes in the end.

It makes a bit of sense. When citing a source in MLA one must do so like this: THIS IS MY SENTENCE (Source (Should be authors last name) and page number where you found info).
so it ends up looking like this: THIS IS MY SENTENCE (O'Hara 2).

It is not of the utmost importance that you find a scholarly work. Just be sure that you do not use wikipedia as a source.
