I started getting sick last week - two really bad earaches in my ears, and then I started to feel a bit better - excuse the grossness of this, but... yeah, the "fluid" trapped in the inner part of my ears had er..popped, and i was coughing it up/runny nose etc, i decided to go to the doctor anyway, she said that earaches come from a build up of fluid that's trapped and the pain is from the pressure on your eardrum. ANYWAY, the pain has just come back today and it's really bad - does anybody know any good home remedies that work?

Some people suggest an onion, or.. garlic or something, does this actually work?

Thanks guys

We always use sweet oil. I think it's nice to heat it a little first.

my mom always said to use a little hydrogen peroxide on a Q-tip (gently with the Q-tip there). If nothing else, you'll clean your ear a bit.

Get some ear drops, drop some in your ear, then hold a piece of cotton to your ear - over night you should be better.

If the oils/ear drops treatment is not working, please, please go back to your doctor. As you've discovered, the ear/nose/throat areas all link up - you may have an infection in any of these areas that is causing the pain in the ears. Such an infection needs to be cleared or it could lead to further problems: best to get it checked at an early stage.

Keep warm when you go out, a scarf round your head or one of those natty little caps with ear flaps - ignore the comments - I sound more like my mother every day.....

Get well soon. :)

Really?

Yep i was told that by the woman who did my candling. Candling if mainly for cleaning out your ears. If you have an infection, it opens it up to potentially getting worse and/ or damage your ear.

I've got this ridiculous vision of someone laying on a table with a lit birthday candle sticking out of their ear.

Believe me, the reality is only slightly less ridiculous. :p

Ear candles work, though. You can cut them open when you're done and witness firsthand the foulness which until moments before had been residing in your ear canals.

Would someone please explain this 'ear candle' phenomenon?

the short end of the candle gets placed in your ear. Have to make sure that no smoke can escape. The other end is lit and as it burns down you start to hear a popping crackling noise in your ear which is the wax etc drying, cracking and being sucked into the bottom of the candle that is placed in your ear. there is a red line marker on the candle and just before it reaches it you put out the flame. The cut open the candle and you see all the gunk from your ear. (one candle per ear). its amazing really. I found that i could hear everything so much better after the first time i got it done.

That falls under the category of: who the heck thought 'I'm gonna shove this lit candle in my ear and see what happens.'
Very interesting though!

I had no idea what "ear candle" was till it was mentioned in this thread and did a little research on the internet (where else?). Health authorities agree that there is no scientific proof that it works and that it is a dangeroud practice (though the lady in Niamh's post looks very peaceful - wonder who is doing her eyebrows).

It is also mentioned that the stuff that appears inside is from the candle itself.

Not sure if I would give this a try.

the stuff in your ears is actually good for you - ear wax protects your ears from things outside - helps to prevent infection

Ear wax may be beneficial but some people (me, for example) make too much of the stuff and it hardens and makes you deaf. I have had two candling sessions: I found I could hear much more clearly after the first, not so well after the second but a few days after it, suddenly a whole load of gunk came out (you really wanted to know that, didn't you? ) and I could hear better than I have been able to for years. I'm going to have one more session just to carry on the good work.

If the gunk inside the candle base comes from the candle itself, it certainly is the same colour as the stuff in your ears, not the same colour as the wax of the candle. As for being dangerous, I guess it could be if you tried a DIY session, frizzelled hair and pillow at least, but in the hands of a trained therapist, it seems pretty safe to me. It's very relaxing - my therapist follows up the treatment with a facial massage which helps clear the sinuses.

As for who first thought of it, it is called 'Hopi Ear Candle treatment' in my therapy centre, so I'm guessing: the Hopi people of North America?

I thought it ear candling was great! Sounds and noises around me were defined and i could hear better than i had in years. I get a lot of waxy build up too so i know where you are coming from. Any therapist will tell you not to do it on your own as there are risks, that if you are going to do it at home, get a friend of family member to hold the candle, and to make sure there is something like a paper plate to catch any ash from the candle (put a hole in the centre and slot the candle through.

You definitely want to extinguish the candles and remove them from your ears when you are finished; as it turns out, walking around with lit candles sticking out of your ears can be dangerous. Learn from my mistakes, people.

That's one of the sketchiest things I've ever seen. I don't understand the logic behind it at all.

I started getting sick last week - two really bad earaches in my ears, and then I started to feel a bit better -

:( Hi limajean, I hope you are feeling well now; However, here are a few tips :
For the simple earache with minimal pain, feeling under the weather and mild fever, try taking tylenol for the fever and mix a combination of rubbing alcohol and "Collyrium" (a mixture of 99% purified water and boric acid); Put just a few drops in each ear leaning each to the side and then place cotton in the ear until before you turn your head upright. Do this a few times a day for no more than 3 days; if it gets worse, see your doctor.
If the earache is very intense, causes higher fever and dizziness; you need to get an antibiotic as you have an infection deeper in your ear canal. Ear aches are nothing to fool with; they can cause anything from hearing loss to infections in your spinal canal.

Antibiotics please! Just read a book written by a neurosurgeon who had to operate on a kid who nearly died because he had an ear infection and tried to only use herbal remedies. Antibiotics, PLEASE! We want your wonderful self on Lit Net for a long time to come! Loves!

Yes, I guess we all survived the years of herbal remedies our parents used; and yet some are very practical. Here in South Florida, we have so many folks from other countries and I'm always learning about their remedies. The difficulty is, that with herbs, a little can go a long way.
If a person has a virus; the virus will mutate too quickly for an antibiotic to work. Doctors sometimes use antivirals on tougher viral infections.
Sometimes a person gets a bacterial infection after having a viral infection; the doctor normally gives a "broad-spectrum" antibiotic that will cover several types of infection; because, until tested, no one really knows what the bacteria is. Although, different bacteria are comfortable and are more able to "set up housing" in different parts of your body. Be well; I hope everyone will get through this flu season, I myself am fighting it off this week.
