I don't know if a thread already exists but do you guys like musicals?
I never got a chance to watch many but I liked the ones I watched.
There was this movie "Chitty bang bang" which I watched years ago as a kid and found very amusing.Recently,I got to see Sweeny Todd and found it great too!

I found them very enjoyable. And while singing doesn't reach the vituosity of opera singers, I think the story line and enetertainment value of musicals are on par with most operas.

Agreed! It's a fabulous film. I was just watching clips on Youtube the other night - love that one of Kelly and CC dancing on the long pinkish lines; her with a scarf blowing....breathtaking number!

I love many many many musicals. I have been trying to collect all the scores and have a lot so far. I own some on DVD too. I will try to list some tomorrow....too tired now.

We do have a social group dedicated to discussing musicals, if anyone is interested. I took it over awhile ago but don't think there is much action in it currently. We can easily remedy that. I hope you all are interested and stop by soon. It's the Broadway social group.

Well yes, if you're after light-hearted entertainment. The characters are well likeable and Lea Michele, the lead in the show sings wonderfully. :)

I don't think I have ever heard of a singing musical series before, it should be good. It's a shame I have missed it. Will try and catch it next time. How many episodes have you seen?

I've seen musical on Broadway since I was six.

Next to Normal was the last musical that blew me away, though. Most of the others I've seen lately have been kind of crappy.

My mother loved musicals,
so they are, in part, the soundtrack to my young life.
These are among those I remember best:

South Pacific-Madame Butterfly-Guys and Dolls-Man of La Mancha-My Fair Lady
West Side Story-Paint Your Wagon-The Unsinkable Molly Brown-Mame-Lil Abner
Camelot-Hello Dolly-Flower Drum Song

Okay since I cannot post in this thread without saying Singing in the Rain, I will once again say that Singing in the Rain is the greatest musical ever made.

Now, Dancer in the Dark is definitley one of the best musicals of the last ten years (far, far better than the overrated Chicago and Rent IMHO). Though I must warn you, it's a Lars von Trier musical remember that

The Sound of Music for me was superficial, though its music is incredibly memorable. As Pauline Kael dubbed it "The Sound of Money". I know I'm probably going to get tarred and feathered for this. West Side Story was good, but most of its power came from the fact that it was based on Romeo and Juliet.

I love anything with Gene Kelley or Fred Astire, and I have to see The Red Shoes once I get my hands on it. Any musical directed by Pressburger is phenomenal.

West Side Story was good, but most of its power came from the fact that it was based on Romeo and Juliet.

I think Leonard Bernstein's music had a big part to do with it as well. Probably one of the most talented composers ever to dabble in musical theater.

My picks would be

Rocky Horror Picture Show - It kind of fizzles around the middle, but it's so great at the beginning.

Tommy - The music of the Who mixed with some great cameos like Tina Turner, Elton John, and Eric Clapton.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivfoVCQM47U

Dancer in the Dark - Ha this one is trippy, but Daniel is right about how great it is. (You might want to avoid if you don't like Bjork)

Rent has no redeeming value in any way, shape, or form.

but:

Chicago > Dancer In The Dark

IMHO. I did not think it was overrated in the least bit, it is a wonderous film.

But the best musical in the last 10 years has to go to Spike Lee's newest musical, Passing Strange!

Bing Crosby in Anything Goes is my favorite of all musicals, though.

Gene Kelly in the Producers was pretty outstanding as well, though not really an all-out musical.

Why has no one has mentioned Moulin Rouge? I know the music wasn't great but it was certainly a spectacular film.

Whenever Singing In The Rain is on Tv I have to watch it. Which is kind of weird because though I think it's ok I certainly don't love it. I just feel compelled

Definitely. It sparked my love for performing again. such a joy to watch. I can't hardly wait for season 2 to come out.

Spring Awakening, anyone?

Hear, hear. I've been listening to Spring Awakening eversince it came out and I'm sure Duncan Sheik gained higher respect for coming up with music that beautiful. And of course, Lea Michele was fantastic as Wendla.
It was staged here in Manila around November last year and it was great show.

Isn't she awesome? She was cast in the anniversary concert of Les Mis, in which Lea Salonga played Eponine. I've heard Lea's rendition before, as well as Judy Kuhn's (well known for her portayal of Cosette), Patti Lupone (original London), and Randi Graff (original Broadway). I'm a big fan . Ruthie's is still my favourite. I think Lea Salonga is much better suited to Eponine's belt role.

Will definitely try and get to Dracula! I'm currently training in Musical Theatre, love love love it!!! Couldn't possibly even start to try and name a favourite but of the ones I've seen:

The Last 5 Years, Wicked, Les Mis, [title of show], Rent, Songs For A New World, Blood Brothers, We Will Rock You, tick, tick... BOOM, Over The Threshold, Avenue Q, Zanna Don't, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Marguerite, Jest End, A Little Night Music, Into The Woods, Forbidden Broadway... The list goes on!

Shows I'd love to see:

Next to Normal, The Wild Party, Tarzan, Jekyll and Hyde, Beauty and the Beast, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, You're A Good Man Charlie Brown, The Light in the Piazza, Grey Gardens, The Color Purple, South Pacific, Finian's Rainbow, Ragtime, Pirates of Penzance...

I think I'll stop there... I love everything from the old classics to the brand new contemporary stuff (Notes from New York, Perfect Pitch and Scott Alan anyone?) and see as much as I can... Currently in a theatre about twice a week!!!

By the way, are you also familiar with off-Broadway musicals such as BARE and Altar Boyz? They also have amazing music, but of course, they don't quite match up to Spring Awakening's standards.

Good question. I remember liking the music, however, I've only ever seen the show once when I went to see my brother doing it. I had never even heard of it before that. So I haven't really listened to the soundtrack since I saw it that one time live, although my brother will occasionally break out into a song from that show.

Oh gosh yes:

Robert Preston: The Music Man, Mame, Victor/Victoria

Shirley Jones and Gordon Macrae: Carousel, Oklaholma,

Shirley Temple: Bright Eyes, The Little Colonel, Poor LIttle Rich Girl (some of the greatest actors of that time played opposite her)

Sandra Dee: in all the Tammy stories

Julie Andrews: Mary Poppins, SoM, Victor/Victoria,

Sean Connery: Darby O'Gill and the little people

And a musical I have been trying to get for years; but it has been banned:

Another professed musical fan! Les Miserables is my all-time favorite.

A lesser known musical which is adorable is "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown". I heard about when researching Kristin Chenoweth. My favorite song is Suppertime, featuring Charlie Brown (Anthony Rapp from "Rent") and Snoopy:

I'm not a big fan of musicals, but I do recall seeing "Tommy" in its first season. Early 1990's I believe, based on the Who's "Rock Opera" Tommy album from 1969.

Here's something interesting and related that I stumbled on recently from "Paint Your Wagon", Clint Eastwood talking to trees:
