I finished The Scarlet Letter last night. In the first scene, when Hester is coming out of the prison, the women of the town are talking about her. They seem to have more anger about what happened than anyone else in the story. I was hoping someone could shed some light on this for me with some educated speculation... Why where the women of the town the most angry? Shouldn't they have been the most sympathetic?
