When wondering by my school library today, I noticed that this week is banned books week. Posted all over the walls were lists of banned books, and a view images of the covers of banned books. I thought that it would be nice to start reading Ulysses in observance...But then I decided that I'm still not ready for it. So instead I'm going to read either Heart of Darkness or Lolita, both of which I own.

Anyone else reading a banned book this week?

Go for Lolita.

I read Lady Chatterley's Lover from the school library :)

The whole concept of banned books gets under my skin. There should never be a restriction on literature. The whole concept behind writing is putting opinion down on paper. Defining a generation to those that will come later. Authors wanted to leave their mark for future societies to help shape the world away from their mistakes. If those opinions happen to offend someone, then by all means they should stay away from the book. It is however not their right to take the option away from someone else. When I printed out the banned books list in honor of this week, I realized I have read most of the books on there already. I was pleased to see that my educational institute did not find it necessary to stick to this list, but instead embraced it and taught us fabulous literature. Removing works from school libraries is ludicrous.

Look for the original Lady Chatterley: 'John Thomas and Lady Jane'. It is much more tender and emotional, and much more sexual at the same time. There are a few changes; the gamekeeper's name in Parkins, and the scene in the cabin is much longer. This version is the one only published in Italy, because of the explicit sexuality and profanity. It is still available, by hard-cover edition is from 1970.

I feel that this is much better than the regular edition- but that's my opinion.

Montaigne's essays. I know, seems unlikely :D But, yes, some of his essay got banned. he was writing at a time when the church had all the power and was more dogmatic than Billy Graham. Also, Shakespeare's plays. Cromwell's puritans banned theatre, instead of a Shakespeare play you got another sermon for entertainment. Oh joy. Thank God* fundamentalists don't have much power any more. Need to keep a careful watch on them, though.

*I'm using the term metaphorically

The French film is based on the first version, isn't it?
