View Full Version : Auditions for Litnet's Youtube Shakespeare Theatre!
Dear Litnetters,
As our polls (http://online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46753) close, with Hamlet leading by 29.63%, it is clear that Hamlet, Prince of Denmark will be the play that will be performed for Litnet's Youtube Shakespeare Theatre!
We would like to thank you for your helpful inputs and participation.
It is therefore with excitement that I announce the start of the auditions! Now, here is the list of the main characters that you can audition for:
Hamlet
Claudius
Horatio
Laertes
Polonius
The Ghost
Ophelia
Queen Gertrude
Anyone who are interested in auditioning are recommended to record a reading of a monologue from the play itself, and send the audio file to NickAdams; our editor and co-director of photography at
[email protected]
To quote the director, Daniel Benoit: "Feel free to audition for anything you like. Audition for as many roles as you desire. If we find more than one person auditioning for a role, we'll put a poll up. But this is certain; everyone will get a role, and probably everybody will have to play more than one."
After that, our casting director; Janine, will go through all the audio files and decide on the final cast list.
For any questions, don't hesitate to ask! We still need more actors so feel free to send in your audio file to NickAdams. ;)
Don't forget to join our social group for updates!

Thank you very much for your time and looking forward to your participation!

Good job, Toni! This should be great fun. I hope you all help me decide who is the best in the final decision making. I don't want anyone to throw rocks at my computer or rotten tomatoes!

I knew you were going for those two, Daniel. I think you would probably make an excellent Hamlet for sure; but I am not prejudging till I hear all the voices and performances. That is only fair, right?

I've been listening to the final edit of my Ghost audition and it sounds quite uncanny and unlike me, I'm really excited!
Aww, Janine, we have full trust in your judgment. But if you do, need help, I'd gladly assist you. Just say the word.
I, on the other hand am considering auditioning as Ophelia or Queen Gertrude.

Hey go for it Toni. I think you could be either one, even though you are very pretty; but you could also look very cool made up as a guy role....so who do you have inmind? Perhaps the male roles are more dynamic. Now we have to think of someone for Ophelia, that is if you don't take it; also Queen Gertrude. I would love to be her (probably just my fantasy and not reality), but I can't act and not sure I could recite well enough, though it is tempting to try it. We'll see...I am so familiar with her lines and I love what she says when Ophelia dies. I have the age/maturity behind me; but then again, someone young could easily play her and probably eons better than I can. I am getting a camera with a video on it; but not sure how long a vid it will take and besides I am camera shy...I better say in the background...I was just thinking outloud and fantasizing.

Let me think about it. Let others please audition for the role. It was more a fantasy than reality; but thanks, Daniel, you are very sweet and flattering.
Now question - will the minor roles be played by the people in the major roles? I am thinking of the players and Rosencranz and Gildenstern and also the three guards and what about Fortenbras?

What you should do is simply post them onto here. Janine will listen to them and make the decision. Sorry for the misunderstanding
By the way Nick, I'm e-mailing you my Ghost audition, but I'm holding off the photography for scene one and the Hamlet audition for a just a little bit.
By the way, for those who are still ambivelent on what role to play, here is what I'm looking for in each major role (this way already posted in the other thread, but it should be here as well):
Hamlet
Claudius
Horatio
Laertes
Polonius
The Ghost
We'll definitley need someone older to play Polonius, for he seems to be the only one in the play whose role simply cannot fit with a young actor.
We might be able to get away with having a young guy for Claudius, but the actor will have to have a ruff and jousty voice.
The uncanny effect of the ghost's voice can be achieved with special effects, but we'll still need someone who does not have in any way a soft voice.
Hamlet, Horatio and Laertes are great for any age and work easily with casting.
As for the female roles; it doesn't really matter how old or young our Gertude actress is, Gertude can also get away with being played by a young actress.
Ophelia again is great for any age and the actress auditioning should have a soft innocent voice.

By the way, it is highly recommended that everyone involved in this production watch either or both the 1946 Lawrence Oliver version and 1996 Kenneth Branaugh film adaptions of Hamlet. Though I must warn you; stay away from the Ethan Hawke version at all costs!

I am partial to the Kenneth Branagh production, myself. I have seen the Lawrence Olivier and to be frank, I wasn't all that impressed. I thought his 'to be or not to be speech' lacked something; whereas, Branagh's was perfection and I liked the idea of the mirrors. I also like the production by the BBC, with Sir Derek Jacobi, in his early days (quite young), reprising his stage role for the film. That is a full version as well and extremely well done and intense; more a play setting than the Branagh version. I would recommend any of these. I don't believe the Olivier is full version. I believe it leaves out the any reference to Fortinbras, which to me is a mistake.

You mean what parts people are auditioning for? Surely they haven't shot the video auditions yet or have they? Glad to see this progressing, either way.

Hey go for it Toni. I think you could be either one, even though you are very pretty; but you could also look very cool made up as a guy role....so who do you have inmind? Perhaps the male roles are more dynamic.
My sentiments exactly, Janine. I've always dreamed of doing a male role onstage or onscreen; but today, just this afternoon, I tried doing Laertes but sounded horribly gay. So I decided right away to stick with Ophelia.

Ohh come on, Janine. I am very sure that you's be excellent as Queen Gertrude. You should at least give it a try. ;)
And we are doing only audio anyway, so your being camera-shy won't be a problem anymore. Pretty please? :D

Daniel, oh wow, I like that first hosting site. Thanks so much for posting it. I think I am going to join that first site today. I found some neat recordings I wish to place in my own playlists. I need to check out the second site more thoroughly; it was late last night when I discovered them both. Tell me, is there anyway to download to ones own computer the audio? I found an interview with Kenneth Branagh, which I really would love to keep for my own files.

Bill Murray was the best Polonius ever though. What about the Zeffirelli? I know it has Glen Close in it, but is that any reason to omit it from the list?

 hahaha, xman....I thought I was the casting director! Nice to see some auditions are in. Thank you both, brave souls. I was frightened of Daniel's'whispering' ghost; a bit creepy; I was taken with Modigliani's full acting (audio/visual) soliloquy (one of my favorite Hamlet speeches)...but cheer up, M...life isn't that dire, is it? I am just joking with both of you; I thought you both did an admirable job. Keep the auditions coming. This is fun!
Anybody hate me yet? :goof: I hope I don't make any enemies here. I think too, we should all vote on the final decisions at the end.
toni, thanks for the vote of confidence; but really I don't think I can audition for Hamlet's mom. I can't recite or act at all and she gets pretty intense and emotional and she has a ton of lines...I am already overwhelmed with the thought. One part of me considers doing it; but I don't know. I am so busy with my personal life currently, I don't think I had better commit to a role. I hope you, dear toni, try out for Ophelia. I think you would be great; but I am not prejudging here. Can't wait to hear you audition. Like I said, this is great fun!

Only in Elsinore, Janine, only in Elsinore. But in all seriousness (or just the contrary, actually), 'What a piece of work is a man?' is only complete with Guildencrantz & Rosenstern shenanigans at either end to balance out the heaviness. Anyway, thanks for the vote of confidence and here's to a successful virgin production.

That's very true...Modigliani....I was almost waiting for one of those characters to break in to comment at the end of your audition. Then Hamlet does lighten up a bit, especially when he hears of the players. They also have that little joke going on, when he delivers the line "Man does not delight me"...I think one of them, then says "Nor me"...then implies a reference to a woman. Hamlet seems to come out of his mood temporarily. Guess I'm used to the Branagh version, where he has a bit of range during that speech; I have seen the movie at least 30 times by now - pretty obsessive huh? I think yours was more like the Olivier version, am I right?...a little more moody and depressive.
Yes, indeedy, only in Elsinore...only in Elsinore..... or is it....only on Litnet!...only on Litnet...?
At least no one has thrown any rotten tomatoes at my computer screen yet.....I will will be expecting it eventually.......

Incidentally, I look to my right in the end of the video because I always hear Rosencrantz's gigglesnort in my head after finishing that speech. And Christ on a pogostick, no! I was not in fact modeling my interpretation after Olivier's. It might have been a bit "emo-er" than Branagh's, but I like to think there was a little more of an emotional (or at least a facial movements) range than old Lawrence's stylistically monotonous and recitation-like...recitation. :D
Tomatoes are a thing of the past. People throw dirty laundry and small dogs these days.

Oh gosh, sorry M; that was my fault; I actually haven't viewed Olivier's version for a few years. What is emo-er...emotional? Your acting and facial expressions were good; so was your timing. And it's good to see your face, too. Nice to meet you, Mondigliani Hamlet! haha...:D

Bravo, incredible audition Modilgiani! Yeah, the music was a bit annoying, but it certainly didn't water-down the excellence of your performance :D
Now I feel shy to submit my Hamlet audition
By the way, of course you're invited to participate, it's a good thing that you came just at the right time, for you would've been unable to join if we had started scenes already. I assume that you've read all of the information in the other threads and know what's going on :D
By the way, I've decided that for minor roles, (i.e. roles smaller than that of Rozencrantz or Guildenstein (yeah I know I can't spell ), for though they are minor roles, their roles are big enough to have a developed personality), so for minor roles, we will just have people volunteer to play them without any audition nessicary, I'll just have to ask our Casting Director first, what say you Janine? :D
Also, though we are in no hurry to get moving, I must remind all of our volunteers to please be practicing their audition and turning it in whenever they are comfortable :D. Like I said, we're not in any rush, and I my self have been busy with classes, but I don't want this project to die.

Well, I didn't want to rave too much, until the auditions all were in. I hope to stay partial; but since you said it, I will repeat 'Bravo!' to both of you. You have more nerve and acting skill than I have; that is for sure. Daniel, please still audition for Hamlet. I am sure M won't mind a little competition - its healthy for all of you.

Yes, welcome here and welcome to the forum, Mondilgiani! You must be a contemporary artist with your user name or just a big fan. I too am an artist. Good job on your acting in the video on Youtube!

Eekk...well, I just tried recording my own voice on my little mp3 player. I then went to recordings and it said none. If you tell me how to do so online - I do have two other microphones (not currently hooked up, but that's no big deal)..and if it can be the smallest part available, I may well consider it. You guys won't let me up about acting. I swear I stink at reciting and acting; but I will give it a whirl and play it back to myself and see if I might pass the test. My voice is a soprano and quite high, I think, so not sure how it will sound lowered as a male part.
Also, though we are in no hurry to get moving, I must remind all of our volunteers to please be practicing their audition and turning it in whenever they are comfortable :D. Like I said, we're not in any rush, and I my self have been busy with classes, but I don't want this project to die.
I will be super busy the coming week, too but I will try and fit something in and I will be checking in often to listen to the auditions.

Thanks for the words of welcome, folks; as the legend dictates, you can call me 'Modi' for short. ;)
Janine,
Aha. How to define 'emo'? I s'pose I should first state that I meant to reference the term in a joking and mildly self-deprecating manner. Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=emo) can probably explain it better than I can, but it basically encompasses all the broody, melancholic, melodramatic and chiefly ridiculous mood swings one experiences generally in adolescence. Thank you for the compliments! I'm actually not a contemporary artist (at least not in the literal sense), but I am indeed a fan of Modigliani, or, rather, his life story. Decadence, brilliance, tragedy, etc, etc. :D
Daniel,
Thanks to you, too, for the vote of confidence! All I can say is right backatcha. You have no reason to be timid in submitting your Hamlet audition. We're all amateurs! I'm actually excited to hear it.

Wow, I really get action when I ask for it. Wondered where you got to Nick; now I don't feel badly; I am always forgetting passwords myself...that can be such a hassle; I see others do it, too.
Wowy, we have some budding actors here. Bravo! I am glad you all choose different parts to act out. I like the sound of all your voices; good job. Both Daniel and Drkshadow have youthful voices; also liked the prior audition(s) for Hamlet. I like your voice for Claudius a lot, DWolfman. I think you have good pacing and can even slow up a little more. I think you all tend to rush it a bit or lag too much at times. But glad to see the auditions coming in now; you all did so well! Way better than I could ever do, even in my dreams. I reserve any more comments, till we are ready to make final decisions. How do we do that - do we vote? The role of Hamlet seems to have three contestants so far, right? Daniel, how did you record that, if you didn't have a microphone? I did hear some background noise, which distracted me. If you wish, I would feel sure everyone wouldn't mind if you redid it, since you didn't have a correct microphone at the time. What does everyone say to that idea?
Remember the roles of Laertes and Horatio are great parts. I would think, also, that someone could have a great time with the Polonius role....really ham that one up.

Daniel, if you don't mind my putting my two cents in, I think you could enunciate a little more in that speech and pace yourself, too; Hamlet and the ghost are very different type performances; but this one of yours reminds me of your ghost...a little subdued and dreamy...remember Hamlet is pretty angry at this point - resentful. I like that you choose this speech; it's a good one.
I wonder why no one yet has choosen the 'rogue and peasant slave' speech. I love that one in the beginning of the play.
Remember all, that Hamlet is a vital young man who is grieving his father's death and trying to deal with this new reality...or seeking what is truly his own reality/responsibility at this time...Hamlet is always introspective and questioning; but he's also manic and rebellious at times. His emotions run the gamet...sad, sorrowful, resentful, manic, questioning, uncertain, etc....his emotions/actions are like a roller coaster ride. That's what makes the character so fascinating - the sudden changes in tone/aspect, etc. within Hamlet himself.
Oh lordy, the casting director is doing the director's job now....I do believe I see rotten tomatoes flying towards my computer screen! I better run and hide.....

Insight is valuable regardless of whom it comes from, especially in community projects like this one. And remember, Janine -- small dogs and dirty laundry. :D My compliments to the three latest auditions!

Thanks Modi, I was beginning to wonder if my 'constructive' criticism was going to wound anyone; which I would never want to happen. I am too nice a soul, perhaps to be casting director. I think you all have great potennial, but, just a suggestion, mind you; you might consider a little more energy in the part; Hamlet is despressed, but he's not dying yet; far from it; he's not crazy over the idea at the end either. I hope whatever I say, makes some bit of sense. I have watched the Hamlet films, so many times and I think by now I know Hamlet; but of course, that's just my personal perception and you all have your own interpretations...I appreciate that. This is making me want to see my Hamlet films again. Of course, I have read the play, too; twice or more in my lifetime. Also, listened to audio productions...still that hardly makes me the expert...but I do love the play!
Now there is a possible role for me - dogs or dirty laundry...hahah....oh boy! eeekkk
Where's toni, our beloved Ophelia?

Where's toni, our beloved Ophelia?
Dear toni's country has, as you might know, been hit by a terrible typhoon. She's okay, but as far as I know, she has been working all day everyday volunteering to help the thousands of people who are now homeless.
Sorry toni for speaking for you, but I know that you're busy
It's okay, we have all the time in the world.

Oh Daniel, I was coming back, thinking of editing my post; I don't want you guys to get angry with me. I should reserve any observations/criticisms until everyone submits auditions. We do have plenty of time. We can definitely wait for toni.
I did see that briefly on the news; then thought of all my good friends in the Phillipines; I hope they are are all ok. I know that toni would be so kind to help out; she is a good person. She and her sisters are true aces; they come from a good family. I have known them awhile now and they are the nicest young women (talented, too) and outstanding members here. Did they start a thread or anything on the floods, do you know? I am now really concerned/worried. To be honest with you, I don't watch TV and I happen to see that and then forgot about it. How terrible it must be.

Yeah so am I :(
But I talked to her this morning, she's fine and safe, she or her family wasn't effected at all. . . .though another two typhoons are coming :cold:
I feel really bad about it :(

You mean two more typhoons are on their way? Oh gosh, if that be so, now I am truly scared and worried for them and for my other friends here on Litnet.

Is she near the coastline? Duh, what am I saying - the whole country is an island; I forgot. Isn't a typhoon like a hurricane? Now I am really scared, too.

Well, she lives in the Luzon area, so. . . . .I don't think so.
No, a typhoon is just a TON of rain. . .I think. On Saturday, they got the amount of rain they usually do in six months in six hours

Wow, that is unreal. Are their mountains on the islands? I wonder if she is on high ground. I hate storms like that. I get upset when hurricanes hit our coastline and I am miles inland. I don't like torrential rain or wind.

Well, I don't know how she wasn't effected, it's really a miracle. She says that the water is thigh-deep outside, and yet not a bit of water has entered the house.
Though she did say that her bathroom ceiling collapsed (which got me REALLY worried), but other than that, nothing else has happened.
(sorry everyone for going a bit off-topic, this is just very disconcerning to many of us Lit-Netters)

Oh that's awful and if they get another one or two, it will be even worse. Why do these things seem to come in bunches. I hope the predictions are all wrong and the storms miss them. I guess the water coming down so quickly could not drain off a roof and thus the bathroom ceiling collapsed. I would just freak if that happened to me; but then again if it's way more tragic around you then you would count yourself lucky if that was all the harm that came your way. That can fixed, lives can't.

That's good. Maybe they have lived through these before. Islands get hit often with storms; still it can't be too much fun.

Oh of course. . . . .it's just that this one was the worst they've had in forty years. . . .
Anyway, I know she'll be fine.

Ok, I see then. She will be ok; she's a strong person and wonderful, too, to help others like that. Stop worrying. I am sure she will be just fine.
I am going to go watch a movie now - no it's not Hamlet - that is over 3 hours long! Not tonight but possibly sometime this week. I am going to watch Witness I think; haven't seen it in years and I picked it up cheap; but then again I am sort of undecided.

The full-length Kenneth Branagh version shot in marvelous 70 MM. I'm watching it on my little 8 inch Sony player. It looks fantastic! I broke my glasses and I can't see anything far off without my sunglasses on, which are prescription. I am loving it as usual. I watch it several times a year! What a case I am! When the film gets to your signature line; I feel tears welling up inside me. I

Well, we're just waiting for the rest of the auditions. Toni might not be able to audition for Ophelia after all because of the brownouts in her city and because of the devasation of the typhoons. In her absence I'll just be the thread creator/moderator.
Don't forget, everyone, auditions are still needed! Multiple roles are virtually manditory.
