I offer the following quote from Dinaw Mengestu, the Ethiopian-American novelist: "As the police cars vanish, I imagine an entirely empty motocade whose sole purpose is to remind people what they are up against,"

He has just described the D.C. motorcade of some anonymous offical, the great motorcades of the Emperor of Ethiopia and the final ignominious departure of the despot from the Palace in the the back of a blue Volkswagen.

I remember walking often in Red Square when a siren would sound and a string of black limos with red lights would streak across the no-drive area and into the openning gate of the Kremlin. Ah comrade, we can offer this...,this anonymous privilege, this elevation above the tourists and the citizens, this speed. All this can be yours.
