Parade of the Dead

Some may prefer
to dwell upon their
broken tears

and wallow in the
ruins of the past,
they are always looking
back to the ashes
of distant tragedy.

While harassing
those long dead
trying to rest peacefully
within their graves.

Fading memories
dug up and paraded
through our streets
of despair

as so many of the
new dead slip away
beneath our notice,

their own lives
made to appear
some how worth
less,

because fate did not
ordain that they die in
monumental, historic,
heroic deaths,

yet they are still human,
and they still bleed
and leave others
behind to grieve.

So many choose
to walk as the tortured
damned of Dante
with heads screwed on backward
ever looking behind,

and the future becomes
only dust through
our fingertips,
blindly passed away.

OMG, you totally wrote this for 9/11, didn't you?

Uhm...'fate did not ordain' is the correction I'm thinking of right now. Otherwise, a superb poem on the futility of grief.

In a way yes, it is a response to be bombarded with memorials year after year after year, it is something of a satire on the obcession of dragging it back out into the lime light, time and time again.

Oh, thanks for catching that.

Lordy! What a poem! Your very darkness in and of itself is the light in this poem!
