Interesting question. There can be seen some connection between The Handmaid's Tale and The Crucible, I think. As in a way the Handmaid's Tale is like a modern, or futuristic version of The Crucible. They play on some of the same themes and elements, of a male dominated society and one that is ruled by their ideas of morality and religion and their attempts at achieving what they look upon as "purity."
Though there are some obvious differences between them as well, in The Handmaid's Tale they believed they would actually achieve something of a sisterhood between women, to unite women to working together, by removing their personal identities, and attempts to make the birth experience some sort of shared event between the wife and the handmaid. While in The Crucible, they seemed to be encouraging people to turn against her by promising women they could save themselves if they in turn give up names of their neighbors, and a wedge was driven between people and their petty grievances, hate and animosity was encouraged.
The Handmaid's Tale though could be a speculation and anxiety that perhaps the days of The Crucible are not truly completely behind us, and that given the right climate they could remerged again within a contemporary world. It is the suggestion of a lingering threat that could still hover in the air.

I think I can definitely see connections between The Crucible and The Handmaid's Tale. There's also names- the handmaids can't use their real names and Proctor refuses to sign his name to a lie.

The importance of having an identity. The handmaids' names are comprised of 'Of' and then their husband's name; they aren't allowed to use their real names. Proctor will not sign his name: 'I have given you my soul! Leave me my name'
