I realize that there may already be a thread like this somewhere in the great depths of this forum, but I wanted to just be sure...if this has already been made, then just redirect me there...but...

Prognostications on possible Nobel 2009 candidates?

Is there really any way to know who is being considered? I have heard terms like "short list" and "considerations", but is there like a public news or Nobel discussion forum somewhere on the internet discussing who gets this prize?

The Press Release at the Nobel homepage says:


According to tradition, the Swedish Academy will set the date for its announcement of the Nobel Prize in Literature later.

That means we'll have to wait for it.

If I were to handicap this year's winners (based on second guessing the geo-political anti popular anti american Swedish Academy's whims) NOT based on if I think they actually DESERVE it:

All I can say is, from that list, I would hope Munro wins - she deserves it, and lacks attention for the simple fact she is a great developer of Short Fiction as apposed to novels. Though, I'd probably give the award to Richard Wilbur, based on who deserves it most by my criteria.

I am also a Munro fan and would be happy if she takes the Nobel. As I mentioned, the list is my (probably) overpriveleged opinion of Nobel winning chances.

If I made a list of writers based on my opinions on who deserved it most, it the list would not look like the one posted! If there is a consideration for Wilbur, they should announce the prize early this year, as he is 88. I have heard rumors that Argentine Ernesto Sabato maybe considered and he is 98. (If its to be him, they should anounce it today and move the ceremony to Buenos Aires...)

That would be hilarious if Pynchon was awarded and with that disappeared yet again for the rest of his life. I don't think they'd award him though, I'd like it, but I just don't think he'll be awarded.

What I really want to see happen is Cormac McCarthy get the award, though it probably won't happen because he's too American.
