I see many people here confusing these writers and their books; There are two different Murakami;Ryu and Haruki. And both of them are involved in cinema. And they are both usually mentioned by only their surnames.I agree it's easy to confuse.
So please share what you think of which Murakami and lets make it clear:)

Is this a response to my comment.

I have not read anything by Murakami, but I did read a collection of short stories by Murakami and he isn't an author that I wish to revisit.:p

Haruki Murakami is one of Japans premier writers. He's written many books including: Kafka on the Shore, Norwegian Wood, The Wind-up Bird Chronicle to name but a few. Haruki Murakami is probably a writer who you like or you don't. His books can be strange, lonely affairs sometimes violent but generally not. He also uses magical realism. He pays a lot of attention to music, especially jazz, food and isolation. Haruki Murakami is one of my favourite writers.

Ryu Murakami, on the other hand, writes very violent stories! I've only read a couple of his books being: In the Miso Soup and Audition. Both were page turning thrillers, very focused with a lot of the action coming at the end. That being said, there were parts of In the Miso Soup where I had to put the book down because the violence was so sadistic and graphic.

Murakami is a common name in Japan, in fact I think you might find that there are a lot of common names in Japan, very regionally centred. There are similarities between the authors, but I think they are similarities you might see in all Japanese fiction, which seems to be very intensely focused in general.

Don't forget Pop culture.

Never heard of this Ryu fellow, and the tad-too-titillating titles of his books are enough to keep me instinctively steering clear of Haruki. Unpardonably annoying cover art on that one, too. :brickwall

I don't know anything about either. I only post because I like the quote at the bottom of your page so much. My name is red, where does it come from?

thanks. It is very good. I almost never write down passages from books either. They have to strike a certain cord.
