View Full Version : What novel is this character from?

The novel in question would have to be one of the major classic ones, because that's the pool I'm dipping a toe into. I'm sure the character was a secondary one; a friend or brother of one of the main characters, I think. He might be Tony, or Tommy, but that idea might be pure muddling from reading too many plots on Wikipedia in too short of a time. The thing I AM clear on is that he was described as never having a woman because he can't find one he can admire for her intellect as well as for her physical attributes; the action of the novel takes place long enough ago that this is unexpected, but that doesn't narrow things down much in the "major classics zone."
I know that's very little to go on, but if anyone is brilliant enough to pin it down I'd be eternally grateful. :brow:
Could it be Mr. Darcy from Pride and Predjudice or Henry Higgins from My Fair Lady?
Either of them seem like they may have said a thing like that, but there is someone else on the tip of my tongue.
This is going to keep me up...

Those are really good possibilities, neither of which *I* came up with... but no, sadly. :brickwall

Probably wouldn't be a Tony...hmmm...
Is it an English language classic then?

I've only been looking at British and American novels, with a smattering of Russian ones.

You might want to look in a dictionary of fictional characters

That's a cool idea-I didn't even know there WAS such a thing!! That'll be useful for fututre reference!! :)
I found one online... but all it has for each character is the name of the book and what the character is in the book, there's no description of their personality or problems. It was still a good suggestion, though, so thanks!! :D

Strange. I found one which said the character, the book they were in, and remarkable things about them (personality and what happens to them).

Bummer... my budget doesn't allow for me to buy a book to look one thing up, and I'm nowhere near a library. Still, thanks for the idea!!

"There is Tommy Dukes, who has no relationship because he cannot find a woman whom he respects intellectually and, at the same time, finds desirable."
