OK, so some of my favourite places are:

1 The Devonshire Cat - best stocked pub in the whole of South Yorkshire, with over 100 bottle beers (with 20/25 of those Belgian) and 25 draft ales, lagers and ciders - some of them brewed locally. Located in the Devonshire quarter of Sheffield, nice place, light background music and not bad food - the staff know what they are talking about and all the beers are always correctly served in their own individual glasses, as it should be. A must for all beer connoisseurs:

2 Strines Inn - 16th century inn with great views and traditional country décor, i.e stuffed animals and brass plates and whatnot. Part of my usual cycle route and a great place to stop off for a coffee or pint.

3 Champs Sport Bar - not usually my sort of thing, but it has a bit of everything, good food (people say) and coffee and a surprisingly fair choice of beer for this type of place. Great for a quick drink and then to move on to some place else (usually to the Devonshire Cat).

Thanks for sharing Niamh, I missed those two while I was in Dublin, they look great. I love Ireland, one of the best places in the world and the friendliest people too!

The Dolphin is one of my favourite watering holes which I discovered eons ago when walking in Surrey, probably the most beautiful county in England, albeit so close to London, and as different as possible to the noisy loutish pubs in the capital.

The Dome is world famous as the fomer haunt of writers, incuding my own favourite Somerset Maugham, and as I usually stay in Montparnasse if I am in Paris, it is conveniently situated for late evening drinking and relaxing.

The Turf Tavern, Oxford.

The Trout at Godstowe

The Bull at Streatley

The Bull at Stanford Dingley

The Boot at Stanford Dingley

The Leathern Bottle at Goring-on-Thames

The Three Bells at Burton Bradstock

The Blue Anchor at Burton Bradstock

I've no idea what the beer is like (as I don't like the stuff :)) but the gentleman who used to accompany me to these establishments was a 'pro', an ex-licensee who knew how a good ale should be served, and he approved of them. I went along for the ride and the food and the people-watching - and in the case of the Turf Tavern, the graffiti in the ladies', a most literary effort as befits the middle of Oxford, next door to New College.

 You get a better class of graffiti In Oxford no doubt. I've always wanted to go to Oxford to look around the university in particular, I will keep that pub in mind when I finally get there.

The first six on the list are all within easy reach of Oxford, Neely - you could do a crawl round them ( mine's a white wine spritzer, soda not lemonade - thanks.)

The Ridge. My local pub, a bit touristy in the summer but not much pasing trade in the winter. (Its the white building in the centre of the picture)

I remember it well. I was passing by when I popped in for a quick one and was accosted by a wild-eyed fellow called Heathcliffe if my memory serves me right. He said he was looking for someone called Cathy Earnshaw, but he wasn't half so manic as the louts that infest the hostelries of London and other English cities most evenings. I asked for a packet of pork scratchings and they said that they didn't stock them. I can definitely recommend this establishment.

You should've asked for Andrew the landlord, he keeps a few packets in the back for regulars.

That Heathcliffe, he's a paragon of respectability by local standards.

Prendrelemick,
I can't offer much in the way of pubs other than a spontaneous gathering at someone's home or along a creek bank or river levee, but it was your photo that amazed me. It's a bit off the subject, but i just wanted to say that is an amazing view!

Yes indeed, that is our beloved Yorkshire for you, 10 minutes out of the City and there you have it.

I believe I, like Brian, also stumbled there on one of my cycling days. I didn't see any Heathcliffe but there was a terrible silence when I walked in (maybe it was the cycling attire?) and then some grizzly local with a big beard, who was sat at the bar (Prendrelemick himself?) told me "not to stray from the path" and another not to "walk on them there moors at night". I couldn't really understand the advice, I had only come into the pub for a quick one and a packet of Bobby's Chilli Nuts (which they didn't have, Bobby who?) before hitting the road back home...

Yes, we know how to welcome off-comed-uns round 'ere.
But any cyclist who manages to pedal up to the ridge, deserves his nuts.

1.The Peninsular Bar in Manila. The sparkle of the overhead glasses, sharply catching the senses and blending effortlessly with a backdrop horizon of hard liquor. Middle aged expats & local businessmen enscounced with comfortable Filipina girlfriends, two steps down from the real Malay/Spanish beauties you see in this country. The staff cannot do enough for you. Adjacent to inhouse restaurants (Italian/Chinese/Traditional Filipino cuisine), you can eat at the bar & really relax. After a respectable session, there is an empty pool on a warm tropical Makarti night. Floating on your back, the fringes of surrounding skyscrapers, palm tree fronds overhanging the water. What a way to sober up!
2. Whiggy's Bar in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Fly in after one year & either of the two barmaids, Joyce or Vilma look at you as if you only came in last night. "Your usual Tim?" and pour a good shot of Wrey & Nephew rum into a tall glass, brimming with ice, a slice of lime & topped up with coke. The local police call in for a drink, the Rasta will lay his dreads on the bar for inspection & the owner Mr Wiggins if you stay long enough will drink with you glass for glass & share his dinner brought in by his wife.
3. The Holiday Inn Bar in Rome. The barman is a pro in the true sense with a memory to match. He will take you through a whole range of Italian wines, aperatifs & digestives that is an education in itself, even for an experienced drinker.
4. The Woodman at Wild Hill, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Real ales, romote location with an customer base that seems to be comprised of retired admirals, army veterans & agricultural workers from the nearby estates. The landlady always asks me how many Guiness I intend to consume & then proceeds to produce it as if on a timeless conveyer belt, supurbly settled, a a dark elixir with a creamy head.

Wow! Some great sounding and exotic places there, just a tad jealous here.
