I'm travelling around the US at the moment, staying in a lot of motels as I go, and it's just occurred to me that none of them have rooms numbered 113/213.

Is this just superstition? Seems odd to me!

Elevators don't have the number 13, so maybe

13 is an unlucky number, so 13,113,213,313, etc etc are not in hotels, and neither is there a 13th floor on elevators or hotels because of superstition. The superstition, i believe, comes from The Bible. There were 13 Apostles, and according to a lot of tradition Judas was the 13th to sit at the table, having betrayed Jesus.

EDIT: also, I forgot Apollo 13 was the only Apollo mission to fail. Go figure.

I know a fancy, expensive apartment building in a progressive area near DC where the (local-gov't mandated or something) special low-rent residences are room number 13 on each floor. It's a great program to integrate some of the more "working-class" residents. I don't know why the building didn't just skip 13 though, like they might've otherwise.

I know that a lot of streets here will not have a house number 13, which can get confusing at times becasue a) they dont number all the houses and b) you are never sure what kind of road you are on.

That's really quite interesting. I've never noticed it before in the UK but then I don't really stay in hotels there and it's rare I'd go into a building with as many as 13 floors. I do know that we usually have houses numbered 13 though, so maybe it's just the case that suspicion isn't such a big deal?

In the A&E in my local hospital they have two bed 12s instead of a 12 and 13.
