I'm new to the group – so, hey guys. My name is Iris. I'm a voracious reader who loves Burroughs, Ginsberg, the whole Beat generation...

Anyway, I found out that an underground publishing house, RE/Search Publications, is offering a Burroughs Valu-Pak, which includes a rare hardback and a 1978 magazine featuring Burroughs.

Since it's the anniversary, I thought I would spread the word – this is something I bought for my boyfriend and he loved it.

Burroughs would be Edgar Rice, right? Wow, can't believe I actually haven't gotten around to reading the guy. Any hints on where I can start?

stealth advertising.. nice ;)

Pryderi - this is William Burroughs, the smack head, not Edgar Rice, the author of Tarzan! ;)

If you're interested in the former, then Naked Lunch or Junkie are probably the best places to start - although his work probably isn't to everybody's tastes.. but if you like weird, twisted, experimental writing then it might appeal

As for Edgar Rice, no idea!

Junkie is a very straightforward read, it's Naked Lunch that is "experimental" (and a bad experiment, to be avoided :-). I don't think Junkie, or anything by Burroughs, is great literature, but if you want the full low-down on taking class A/B drugs then Junkie is worth reading. If you want to seek out Junkie, there's a paperback with an introduction by Will Self which is good bargain. I have never taken class A/B drugs, by the way, and Junkie makes me feel like I know what it's about without going through the experience, and it makes me feel like I never want to go through the experience!

P.S. "Trainspotting" is much better on all counts!
