I am tempted to nominate Twilight on the grounds hey its got vampires in it and shouldn't we at least acknowledge the fact the book is so popular and understand what other people are reading nowadays . Having said that I couldnt get past page 250 with out risking damaging the book I was that annoyed so I am not going to do it.

Instead I am going to nominate Paul Magrs' Never the bride
:D

No thread such as this should get away without Lovecraft!

How about "The Call of Cthulhu"?
Is it possible to nominate it?
If not, perhaps then "Shadow over Innsmouth"?

If short stories are on the short list, would anyone be interested in reading the collected stories of M. R. James?

How about Move Underground (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Move_Under_Ground) by Nick Mamatas? Since you just read On the Road and someone wants Lovecraft, why not combine both?

I have yet to come across a horror novel that really frightens me. Charlee Jacob (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?p=759338#post759338) assaults the senses with some cheap tricks, but she never scared me.

Drk, I'd support you, I would, but I am discomfited with writers who resurrect dead writers as characters. I think the greater challenge is in the honor of imitation.

I change my nomination to The Dark: New Ghost Stories (http://www.amazon.com/Dark-New-Ghost-Stories/dp/0765304457/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top) edited by Ellen Datlow.

Everyone loves a ghost story. This collection contains 16 ghost stories written by some of the best modern horror writers and literary fiction writers. It would also give an opportunity for those wanting to expand their horizons to check out new writers: Jeffrey Ford, Tanith Lee, Mike O'Driscoll, Ramsey Campbell, Kelly Link, Glen Hirshberg to name a couple. It was the winner of the international horror guild award for best anthology.

I mean seriously can we please do something different and less predictable than Dracula and Frankenstein, Lovecraft and Poe?! There all great stories and great writers, but everyone already knows about them, and can pick them up on their own. This is the perfect opportunity to explore some new voices and new writers.

I think a Stephen King book would be in order. Perhaps Bag of Bones or Misery. You need to pick one to nominate.

I am not sure if I would consider The Collector a horror story, personally speaking.

I am afraid the nomination period is now over. You can vote for one of the books in the poll if you like; as soon as you have 50 posts, that is :)

I can't believe that beloved is considered horror. I guess in a way it is, but compared to the collector (a book that has inspired so many serial killers) I would have chosen that.

I'm a bit surprised myself to see Beloved on the list. Either way Scher, I'll not be voting since I can't promise to join, but I will try to join in on the reading. If I were to vote however, it would go to either The Collector or Thirsty :)

What? Nobody likes ghost stories or wants to explore new authors? Come on people vote for The Dark: New Ghost Stories!

Scheherazade

I haven't read Beloved but the synopsis said it involves ghosts and such?

Anyway, since the voting has already started, we cannot do much about it.

So, go Beloved!!!

Wheather or not it truly is a "horror" story I would look forward to reading Beloved.

I'm certainly not unhappy to see it here:) I've read it before, and it does involve ghosts. I don't know if I really consider it horror, but I did read it for a Gothic lit class. It is dark in some ways but not in a similar fashion of Lovecraft or even Stephen King. All in all, it is a great book, and if it isn't picked here it is worth starting another little group to read it.

Frankenstein is an excellent book but I am not sure I would like to read it again just now...

Beloved, anyone? :D

Dark Muse

Hehe yes I agree, I really enjoyed it, but I don't need to read it again, becasue there are too many other things I haven't read yet.

Just a short comment. I hope the book "The Beloved" is a lot better than the movie. I personally hated the movie, which stars Oprah. I watched it specifically to see the farm where my ex-boyfriend had his Civil War re-enactments. Oddly enough, I didn't recognise anything. Perhaps one scene was an area I did sort of know. I like the movie up to a point; then I began to moan at how ridiculous I thought it all got to be. Like I said, I hope the novel is a lot better and makes more sense. I didn't exactly see it as a ghost story but I guess it is. I saw it more as a drama about a family.

And Jozanny, we would never poke your eye out; honestly. You have enough grief, without having a swollen black eye! By the way, I heard something negative about your library on the TV the other night. I didn't catch it all but seemed it was to be shut down for a time. Sorry about that.

IMO, if I may make some very general comments, the book is better than the movie, and I did not see Oprah in Sadie. However, Beloved caused me to cease reading Morrison, but for now I'll leave it there; it's complicated.

A toast to good sisterhood Janine! Statehouse gamesmanship is over in this end of the tri-state; the main branch and most of the others are staying open for now:p, which is why I voted, and hey, at least I have some online friends here at LitNet, and maybe that is worth a little story project at some point... mmm. A wheelchair possessed by ghosts maybe?

I like Mary Shelley's rather unassuming, if alarmist, masterpiece. I like it more than the Hollywood versions of it which have mildewed the poor classic, but I'll pass for now, with an occasional whine for The Collector along the way. I will reconsider in three years, if that is the time limit.

Wow, I didn't know Frankenstein had taken the lead. I think it's a fantastic novel. I've read it twice, so this should be an interesting disgussion for me; I hope I can do more than sit in; hope I can recall the book and add my own humble opinions. I always find it is such a thought-provoking story...I recently listened to the audio abridgement; I don't like abridgements but considering I read it twice already I figured I could savor the essense of the text...it was quite good.

Dark Muse

Oh wow, at first I thought Beloved had pulled ahead and was going to take it, but Frankenstein all of the sudden got this great push
