What country are you in?

Generally, I recommend picking up some languages if you don't have any, it will certainly open your prospects somewhat in the end if you choose to study literature. Generally, the job market is the same as any other, except if you have languages, more options exist.

So, we generally say, go into a regular job as a yuppie, become a translator, become a teacher, or become an academic. The actual field of study you are in rarely effects your job in the future - 32% of CEOs in Canada, for instance, have degrees in the humanities, and not in business.

That being said, if you want to be an academic, read hard, read everything, and work your but off, because it is incredibly competitive - it isn't an easy position to get, and it becomes harder each year. Getting languages will surely help though, and a second major generally helps quite a bit.

From there then, I'd need to know where you are from to advise you.

I would recommend you to be really sure of your course. I wanted to study literature after secondary school, but changed my mind at the end... so now I do political science and I think it was my best shot....

So here is my advice. You are 18 and have no idea what you want to, but you want to something. Maintain hope, you have plenty of time to figure it out and probably will.

Try some exploration strategies like a class at the local community college, work in a coffee shop and read the paper, or even do something like serving: Teach for America (need a BA- so can't do this one).

Where is the anxiety coming from- you are parents? If it's you that's good, parents ignore it. It's your life now to do with what you want. Anyway, it'll work out.
