View Full Version : Unanswerable Questions

I know that this isn't really a game, but then again neither is the "ugly words" thread.

What I'd like is for you to pose some questions that you have which can not be, and likely never will be, answered (ever) by any means (religion and science included). I'm very interested in this subject as I believe that questions drive our species, and unanswerable ones are darkly seductive.

I'll start with an obvious one:
Where does the universe end? How could it possibly end, when there has to be something beyond that? It can't just be that there's a wall at the edge of the universe, and that's the end of it.

Obvious flip-side:
What is the smallest particle of matter? What are the components of a quark, and the components of those components? How could anything be the smallest particle of matter, when everything has to be made of something?

NOTE: Please don't try to turn this into a philosophical discussion, just because that would muddle my precious, simple, debate-free games forum. If you would like to discuss the philosophy behind the mysteries of the universe, I reccomend that you post in the the philosophy forum.

juniperwoolf, your questions are easy to answer:
where does the universe end? - think of the universe as an infinite sphere, since it has no borders, you cant reach its end, see? could you reach the end of the earth by walking?
ihow could it possibly end, when there has to be something beyond that? - it doesnt end, thats why its infinite. the universe only exists as long as there is someone observing it, so if as long as you observe far enough, the universe will still be there to be observed, no matter how far you go, see?
what is the smallest particle of matter? - there is no smallest, because small and big are concepts linked to dimensions, and as long as you keep going inwards, there will be something, because its infinite (on both ways, big and small)
what are the components of a quark, and the components of those components? - the components are made of components which are made of components, and it never ends, because its infinite, see the loop?
how could anything be the smallest particle of matter, when everything has to be made of something? - see tangible reality is based upon the concept of dimensions, you live in a dimension that is different to an ant's dimension, let's say. the sun is a different dimension, because its much larger, and there are other dimensions which we cant see or be part of because we are either too small or too large. everything is made of something, but no matter how big or small you go into the universe you can observe, there will always be something ahead of it, because its infinite, see how all your questions are the same question?

Yeeeeeaaah, those are really easy, scientific, undebatable, tangible, universally accepted answers on which most scholars agree. Good point. (said in a sarcastic tone and with a good-natured eye roll).

Why is it that we as human beings constantly feel the need to question our existance and surroundings?

Why is it that we as human beings constantly feel the need to question our existance and surroundings?

That was going to be one of mine. It ties in with this:

Why are human beings so different from every organism that has ever existed? We feel the need to question AND teach, we have a part of the brain that is dedicated to rhythm so deep inside of our brains that no matter how much brain damage we suffer we never lose it, we create things like cities, cars and computers and do things like chat on forums... beatles are mostly like other beatles, mice species are like other mice, but we're so different from other primates and we evolved SO rappidly that when our existance is (accurately) plotted on an evolutionary clock its impossible to even discern the thin black line that is us. Surely conditions that lead to the natural selection of humans have existed before (there have been many ice ages), so why now?

What exactly are viruses, how did their evolution come about, and (most perplexing) why the hell do they look like little machines?
