What process do you boys and girls undertake when you analyse a novel, I more or less:

1. Read the novel (taking interpretative notes).
2. Compile notes and dwell on them.
3. Read the novel again, finalising my personal interpretations.
4. Read a study guide, or a book on the author, and scour the internet for other intrepreations.

I guess, when it comes to deconstructing a complex novel like Ulysses, and wanting to squeeze every juice out of it, maximising my notes as possible, I just feel like I'm missing out on some major process. I know, you may condemn for trying to box something that is unboxable by analysing in such a manner, but I've been dealing with Ulysses for quite some time, and want to feel like I've 'conquered' it, before moving on to my next novel. I hear that Universities often have facilities that dwarf any other manner of literary resources for analysis. I've also been told to check out the overlooked process of hitting a city library and rinsing out for information on my topic, but I can't help but feel that'd be in vain.

Any ideas on extracting and understanding all worth of a novel?
