Okay, I have learned that sonnets are part of poems, in high school. But, why can't we just call it "paragraphs"? It doesn't really matter, does it? Please someone help me understand the logical reason for this.
Just to start from the beginning, I found this definition of "sonnet" from a non-literary website, Dictionary.com:
–noun 1. Prosody. a poem, properly expressive of a single, complete thought, idea, or sentiment, of 14 lines, usually in iambic pentameter, with rhymes arranged according to one of certain definite schemes, being in the strict or Italian form divided into a major group of 8 lines (the octave) followed by a minor group of 6 lines (the sestet), and in a common English form into 3 quatrains followed by a couplet.
–verb (used without object) 2. Archaic. to compose sonnets.
–verb (used with object) 3. Older Use. to celebrate in a sonnet or sonnets.

There is a such thing as a verse paragraph already:
WHEN I see birches bend to left and right
Across the line of straighter darker trees,
I like to think some boy's been swinging them.
But swinging doesn't bend them down to stay.
Ice-storms do that. Often you must have seen them 5
Loaded with ice a sunny winter morning
After a rain. They click upon themselves
As the breeze rises, and turn many-colored

You can see the modernist play with the paragraph here, with the removal of the pentameter, which eventually morphs itself into this sort of thing:
Such female whimsy floats about me like
a kind of tulle, a flimsy mesh,
while feet in gumboots pace the rectangles-
garden abstracted, geometry awash-
an unknown theorem argued in green ink,
dropped in the bath.

And then it eventually pulls itself apart, whereas the sonnet on the other hand, from the beginning stages
A la stagion che il mondo foglia e fiora,
accresce gioia a tutti i fini amanti:
vanno insieme a li giardini allora
che gli augelletti fanno dolzi canti:
la franca gente tutta s'innamora,
ed in servir ciaascun traggesi innati,
ed ogni damigella, in gioi' dimora;
e a me n'abondan marrimenti e pianti;
ché lo mio padre m'ha messa 'n errore,
e tenemi sovente in forte doglia:
donar mi vole, a mia forza, signore.
Ed io di ciò non ho disìo né voglia,

Already you see the play with the rhymes, and division into different groupings, even if you cannot understand the language - the arrangement of the argument into sections helps to contrast ideas better, and the compactness offered in that way helps to keep the form potent, and balanced.
No wonder then, is this the one closed form that has come down the best over time in all languages pretty much - its 14 lines offer the perfect venue for expressing an argument.

Thanks very much for the replies.
The reason I was asking that we must pay attention to the smallest biological dimensions of poems. We the literature writers know that once we write the stanzas, we understand the meaning of the novels of Asian Haiku. Haiku is the real good example of the definition of reality of beauty. We will have to research how universe came about because of the beauty of butterflies that fly on the skies that smells good of tree books, hence solved.
