View Full Version : IMPORTANT: Server Move

It was discovered recently that the hard drive on the server this site runs on is failing.
So we're moving to a new server, maybe sometime this weekend.
This will result in some downtime or inconsistency with the forum because of how the domain system works.
The new IP will be 174.133.97.227.
When the time comes (NOT YET!) if you edit your windows "hosts" file..
http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/hosts.htm
To have 174.133.97.227 point to online-literature.com you will speed up your own access to the forum.
IMPORTANT: If you made a windows hosts file edit previously, such as last time we moved YOU WILL HAVE TO CHANGE IT AFTER THE SERVER MOVE OR YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS THIS SITE.
The good news is, not only is the new server new, it is also better. 12 gigs of ram, fast quadcore processor.
By the way, you'll know when it is time. I'll post here when it starts and at some point after that you'll be unable to access the site or, when trying, you'll be forwarded to that IP. Then it is time.

so if I click to a link stored in browser history (eg most visited on firefox) will it take me to the new site? Or will I have to clear browser history & re-start? What about the cookies I have on allow for here? The whole changing IP thing is gobbledegook to me & doubt I'll be able to get that to work....

Good to know, it'll make me stay of the "crack-site" for a few hours.

No, none of that is true, and yes cookies will still work, after the chance is complete.

If you can read this, you're reading at the new server. Post away.

I'm actually having problems with the site repeatedly directing me into signing in. I have signed in, written a response to a given thread, and when I attempted to post it I have been directed into signing in again???

Sounds like a cookie issue, your cookies could be messed up. Hopefully it resolved on it's own,b ut if you delete the cookie entirely and then try again and restart your computer it could fix it.

Well I'm having major problems accessing the site. There seems to be great chunks of the day where I can't access the site at all, instead I'm getting a 'lost connection' message. Mainly this appears to be during the day (GMT) - today from around 09:30GMT until 14:20GMT. Yesterday during the day was a problem, as was yesterday evening (from about 18:00 GMT, I don't know until how long 'cos I gave up.). No issues with windows hosts files as I haven't made one, and I've tried to access the site from home and from work and met with the same problem. Seems to have been going on since Friday.

It's almost funny, but I had no problem about this until yesterday, when I couldn't get here all day, and it took a while for me to get here today.

Yes, it has been crashing in the middle of the night my time, I am trying to figure out why.

Yes I couldn't get on here most of yesterday and this morning. I'm afraid I don't really understand the stuff in the opening post too. What exactly am I supposed to change (if anything) and when?
Thanks.

Me too. I couldn't get on yesterday or earlier today from work or home. I don't understand all the technical stuff.

the cause of the crashes has been identified. The problem is it is part of the nightly backup so it can't just be turned off. I will have to continue to work on the problem.

Yes, I am taking this in stride, but I'm having trouble with my bookmark getting me here. I've had to click on topic threads in my history. I assume it is the server change and or the glitchy nature of this notebook.

I am in the same boat as Joanny, I think. Actually, if I type online-literature.com into my browser, I get
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' in /home/aspen0/public_html/index.php on line 216
This just started in the last couple of days. Before that, typing in online-literature.com usually (but not always...???) brought up a weeks-old cached version of the page.
I ended up solving the (older) problem by typing "1" which caused the browser to fill in the rest of the address. However, unless I scroll down to a particular area of the forum, I now am getting the Parse error I pasted above. (ie. there is no way for me to look at the online-literature.com home page where the dozen or so most recent forum posts were listed--a very handy page.)
I'm using Safari/Mac OS X, btw.

I'm getting that same error message when trying to load up the home page. I have the forum index page in my task bar and thats okay, but if i go to the homepage, i get that message.

I have no idea what caused that. I recently changed the homepage to cache it to make it load faster, and that is a basic typo error, but the page ws working last I checked. Then I was out all day so didn't notice the error. Weird. But I reuploaded the file and it works fine now.
