i've been told to see this movie by a friend, and doing a bit of research, it is based off of a book called Dream Story. Has anyone read this? thoughts on it would be appreciated

The movie is a bit quirky - I didn't particularly like it, though I know people who found it more inspired (or liked seeing Nicole Kidman topless), as for the book - I hadn't even heard of it until now.

It's worse than the movie.

I haven't read the book either, though I enjoyed the movie. Stanley Kubrick, apparently, said it was his worst movie, but I enjoyed the strange plot and the acting was above average.

I liked the film, but the book Dream Story (Traumnovelle) by Arthur Schnitzler is better.
I would say the film is a more modernized version of the book.

All i know is Stanley Kubrick, my favorite director, directed the movie. The same guy who directed 2001, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Lolita etc etc etc

The main point is, this movie is posthumous and he never got to fully finish it before he died.

And also: This. Movie. Blows.

No matter how much I like Stanley Kubrick and like sex, I can't wrap my mind around a terrible movie.

Never knew there was a book either. The movie was trash. Paradoxically both boring and gratuitous sensationalism. If it wasn't for the sex parts it would have put me to sleep. :D

It's loosely based on a novella by Schnitzler called The Dream story. I think the novella is better but only understood what Kubrick was trying to do with his film after having read it.

I can't believe that so many people don't like this movie. I thought that it was wicked. Then again, I hated 2001 until the end with the space fetus. I'm also a David Lynch fan, so maybe my taste is a bit off-beat. But seriously, really? Trash? That sweet ceremony scene, and the part with the costume store owner's daughter? I loved it.

I mean there are always good things to be said about Kubrick's movies. I blame the fact that it is not so good to Kubrick dying before finishing it. It is his only film that isn't brilliant, in my opinion. It has some great scenes and great directing/cinematography, but the plot just doesn't work. And I also am a David Lynch fan, I don't think it's your taste, I just think compared to the rest of Kubrick's movies this movie doesn't shine so brightly.
