Wondering

When I think of the past, wondering what did I do,
Was it worthy or not, somehow I don’t know.
And the future ahead sometimes looks so cold and bleak,
I get to wondering…

What if it’s all just illusion and dreams,
Vapor in the wind, just drifting away
A wave in the sea washed up on foggy shores,
I get to wondering …

If life has any meaning beyond the chiseled dash
Between the two dates on some marble stone—
The time that we spend before Death comes to call
I get to wondering …

Will anything be remembered that I have done
Or will I be tossed aside like a old garden weed—
A ghost roaming out there, with no place to rest
I get to wondering …

I get to wondering …

Wondering…

Honest and haunting. I was especially struck by:

the chiseled dash
Between the two dates on some marble stone—

And of course the repetition of "I get to wondering …" had varying effects, from the simply metaphysical, to the plaintive.
