View Full Version : Lit-net forum meetup? yewwwww
Would anyone be interested in the idea?
I know a few of us have met up, but i don't think a large group of us ever has?
I think with
a, planning/working around school/work
b, getting money together etc,
it's probably best to have it (if we do) a year or two from now. I'm just curious to who would be interested in coming, etc
I'd make us chocolate pizza :brow:

Why thank you. I would love to meet you Lima. I think you once said your family travels to the US. If you are around NYC please let me know. :)
I would love to have a big coordinated meeting somewhere in the world. Alas the logistics of that would be tough. Probably would take at least a one year heads up, if not even more. But I would be game if things in my personal life allowed me to travel to whereever we decide.
There are some members I would absolutely love to meet in person at some point. Unfortunately the amount of school I have for the next few years makes it extremely difficult. If however it was somewhere I had interest in visiting and I could coordinate my 3 or so weeks off per year around I would do my best.

I'd be in... I have travel plans anyway, so scheduling to be at a certain place at a certain time would be extremely possible. I'd love to meet quite a few people off the boards.
Seems a bit tragic though - assuming a few years from now, that does work out, there is no way in hell everyone is going to head out to Australia - that would be the worst place to have it! No offense, but heading down under just doesn't seem practical.
Of course, by then, anything could happen (I'll probably be banned from the boards of something for running my mouth off) or could, if my plans hold, be in China, and in no financial state to travel back for a visit to North America - there is still hope though, but hope at unless it happens in my backyard, I can't see myself heading out to meet you guys, though, maybe if I visit a place I could meet some people for drinks - I don't see much objection there, but, honestly, I'm a student - the money I have goes to books and loans.

It sounds great!:) Although the travel from here will be costly. And it's quite impossible for a student to extend a vacation trip.;) -- I really want to meet all of my LN friends!:)
Ohkay but you guys are all considering the reasons why not to go, if you do that then it'll never happen. Like i said, realistically, it probably wouldn't happen for about a year or two but.. it's inevitable, it has to happen eventually.
Location would be voted on. And a year or two is enough time to get money together, work out dates etc

We have a very large thread on this in the forum recesses. My vote is still for my original idea in that thread.
The problem with a forum re-union has a lot to do with the size of the forum now and that it is quite likely the main posters now here will be completely different in 2years time from who the are now - sure there will always be a few of us old-timers lurking around - but it is always an explosion of people who newly join the forum that become very active for a few months then drop off the map. Also might get stuck with some folk who just plain annoy the hell out of you, it is far easier/sensible to just organise to meet up individually with the members you are most comfortable with.

There have been a few attempts but none successful. The singular meet ups have on the other hand.
Oh yes, very successful so i hear Niamh :brow: ahem.
Look, i still think it's worth a shot. If people don't want to turn up then sure, they won't. There's bound to be (if it happens) people there you don't necessarily get along with but that's the same with any situation.

I only seem to bve getting half posts here
But the main issues were aside form the ones Kilted pointed out, logiostics of where? There will always be members who are too young to fly alone. and there are people who have never flown. and wheer do we have it excatly Europe? Where ( It used to be anyway) the majority of the members were? Noirth america given that is the location of the creator of the site and ( no offence to anyone) the statistics of Americans and flying.
And then you have the issues of cost and customs. I personally HATE having to deal with the faff of customs and preffer not to visit countries where it takes longer than 10 minutes to breeze through. I get irratable especially after longhaul flights. Yes I know its nesserary and all that and I was horrified at the lax of customs and immigration checks somewhere I went recently. But I still preferr not to have to actually go through with it. so there are lots of issues like that . :D

Yeah but NO one likes customs. That's a minor issue that shouldn't prevent it from happening. No matter where you go.. customs will be there. It's a silly excuse IMOP
I personally think that if anyone has issues with the idea, then the answer is pretty simple : don't come. But for those who
a, think a year or two is enough to work out dates and money and b, are willing to come, then i think the meet up should happen

Not to be harsh or anything but by that point, if that's the case, that's the case. Like i said, the idea of the meet up is for those who want to come and will make the decision to come. If some people can't come i don't see the point in putting a stop to the whole thing

Oh! If I had the funds available, I would definitely be in for this, but I think the most difficult part would be deciding on a time, rather than a place. School semesters are different everywhere and people have jobs and whatnot. Either way though, if I can possibly do it, I will.
And what is this, LJ? I don't make your list!? ;)

There are couple of people here I keep in touch out of the Forum but I am also glad that there is this large group forum friends with whom I communicate daily on the Forum.

It would make sense to me to do multiple meet-ups, wherever people are already. I live in the same place as Jamesian - haven't seen him online for awhile - and the bordering state of where Mr.Hyde lives... it seems sensible to meet people in a city you are traveling to, etc..

Hopefully one of those locations is New York, I'm moving there in a year. :p
From what I heard it sounds like: New York, London, and Toronto seem to be the locations people keep suggesting.
OH AND ANOTHER THING,
i'm sure if this thing happens, a few of us might turn it in to some holiday-esque thing and i'm sure a lot of us a looking forward to the prospect of traveling somewhere new etc, so if there is a strong objection for a place where there seems to be quite a few members who er, reside.. there, i suppose crossing it off the list would be logical.
BUT, i suggest at some point we all put a place down, and then we all vote and narrow it down and then vote again
Hopefully one of those locations is New York, I'm moving there in a year. :p

Nah. Point is, I think, we can all hang out with the people we've always wanted to meet, discover some common interests, other than literature, which will obviously be involved, and also just have a good time.

...Nikolai, you lived in Qualicum Beach? that's crazy! I live just south of there in Nanoose Bay, well sporadically, but that's where I call home...
Yep I lived there for 5 months :) It was one of the best summers of my life. As I said the most beautiful place I've ever seen, with also some of the best hiking trails, mountains, rivers, etc., the whole place is so clean too. My family lives very near there, I need to visit them when I can, so maybe we could meet there sometime in the future. No plans currently but I think I will visit eventually.

Yeah, that's really inexcusable. Not unpatriotic (I'm not saying those that don't know their national anthems are unpatriotic, that's neither here nor there), but unprofessional. If he's agreed to a performance, then he didn't do his homework.
The whole different interests thing, well yeah, we all have different interests, that's part of the fun of it, but the main reason that well, brings us together is a love for literature.
Like i said, it's good opportunity for those who are keen on meeting a few people and being able to see them all at one gathering, opposed to jetting all around the place.
We'll need to work out rules though, for who can come etc,
i mean, everyone is welcome to but it'll be a bit annoying if a bunch of people vote for a location and then don't end up coming etc

I agree with this..
somewhere like New York, London, Dublin, etc. seems preferable as these places are fairly easy to travel to... whereas so many smaller places are much more difficult/expensive to get to...

and a lot of these are the major international airport locations that open access to most of the planet. London alone has four Internetional airports (gatwick, Stansted, City and Heatrow) which probably makes it the most accessable of the lot. and let not forget that the Port Tunnel gives trainline access for friends in mainland Europe if they didnt want to Drive... or the ferry.

I think we should just rent out a massive hotel convetion hall. Those things are fun. Or at least the ones I rember going to as a little one when my dad went to confences were fun the food was alwaysd good, the beds were always comfortable.

I'm also sort of liking the London idea... I have business there anyway, haha, and other people to visit, so I could make it a huge shot.
One thing I'd like to ad, is that this should be like. A week long event. Everybody should say what days they will be there, so you can plan to see the people you want to see if you can't stay for the whole thing. Scheduling.
Nightshade

Scheduling sond right, umm and on that note this should NOT I repeat NOT occur in 2012, prices are going to sky rocket into insanity andits not liek london is cheap to begin with,. But if we wait til 2013 for example ( yes I know its along time but some people are going to need to do some heavy saving for this and noone can really afford to splurge at the moment) there w=ill be alot more hotels and in direct reaction to the 2012 the prices will come down a fair bit for a few months. At least I think that is how it works.

We could have a meet up and do something for charity too. Say like everyone who participates donates money to a local charity and could get them to "sponsor" the meet.

I don't think it's off-topic at all, any more than any other talk of where to go or what to do. Is it more off-topic than if someone said, let's get together and to go the pool or the lake? I am just suggesting it. I don't actually have many ideas... I can't think of anything better than tree-planting but maybe that's not enjoyable. Perhaps we could clean up trails - I have a friend who did that for a summer and she said she really loved it. Of course in this case it really depends on where it was.

Personally, if I'm traveling somewhere, I'm going to go sight seeing and socializing, as selfish as that is. I do charity/beneficial to the environment work at home, and have planned specific vacations to do so, but I put in my time in my everyday life. Buuut that's just me. (I'm not bashing your idea, Nik, that's just my input! Apologies.)

Wow and whats this amazing registerd charity called ?
Keep the martian king happy fund I suppose? :p
Seriously though while I do see the appeal of charity, I see too many issues with it. CHarities are inavriably tied with values and morals and particular modes of thought. For insatnce I am sure that there will be people who would object to doing something for Christian aid just as much as there would be people objecting to do something for muslim aid. and how do you decide who is the most worthy? its all vastly complicated.
People need a party organizer and to chose more then on place, maybe north hemisphere and south hemisphere. People sound like they are live all over the world. Maybe a lottery system or a few talk over skype, to witness a fair choosing of the destination.

The real issue is bigger than that, if its held here in the uk there are loads of people who will need invitation letters to visit and how do you go about issuing them anyway? And am discovering this is not just an issue limited to visiting the uk, it seems alot of places require invtations from alot of people.
for insatnce I wouldn't suggest Egypt, because while ther is alot to do and see and such, I for one always end up in a fight with the passport control about visas. Every single time. ANd I lived there for years! And as a half egyptian am supposed to be able to wlatz in without a visa.

No actually it seems that it depends on wha exactlay your passport is. See as I a begining to understand it it goes something like in alphabetical order American, Australian British Canadian most of western Europe and New zeland ( what is the name for soimething that is of newzeland anyway?) passports will get you most plaes with less trouple than if you are flying on a so called 'third world' passport.

*confused*. This is what I do. I buy a plane ticket. I have my passport. I get on the plane. I get off the plane and give the scary man my passport. He asks me some questions. I answer questions (though perhaps not entirely truthfully). I am waved through. I visit. I leave. *end*
I'm pretty sure you don't need a visa for every country, i've done A LOT of traveling to a vast amount of countries and haven't needed one, perhaps that's because i am 17, though i doubt it. I know in China you need one, but i don't think it's with every country

U.S customs are stricter than UK customs for whatever reason. Probably because people in the U.S are overly up-tight.
General rule - you only need your passport
Niamh
07-21-2009, 06:03 AM
American customs is crazy. You need emigration forms, documents to say where you are staying etc. I look at the Queues for american customs/emigration everyday in work.
We also would have to take into consideration that some members of the forum may need to be invited to certain countries by a resident... Not everyone can waltz into countries with only a passport. I know for Hong Kong and Singapore, because i'm Irish, i can be visa free for one month. In Europe i can travel visa free obviously... America there is some agreement with my country... but many other countries I would.
When i went to New Zealand, my visa was included in my ticket... so you may actually need visas for countries and not even realise you purchased one in the first place. :)
