Yesterday my daughter brought a new cat from the street. He doesn't have a name yet, I would appreciate some help to find an original nice name for him.

Don't give him a human name.

Neo?

That is a wonderful and healthy looking street cat.
Names; there are so many choices. I see you have a Tolstoy quote, you might consider a Tolstoy character?
Our pets are typically named after classic American TV show characters.

It will be easier to call to him if he has a two syllable name. My cat is a female and I call her Milly. When I was a boy, I had a male cat called Timmy.
Blackie is quite a good name for a black cat but as he's Hungarian, perhaps he wouldn't understand the connection. How about Fritzie?

Thank you very much for suggestions!
I will consider Neo or something from Russian literature, maybe from Bulgakov's Master and Margarita.
Fritzie is brilliant one, but it is too common in Hungary.
I am not the only one to decide, I must agree with my daughter.

Something from The Master and Margarita is good! Bezdomny or "The Master." :D Or Behemoth/Begemot, after the black cat.

We have some Blue Russian cats that look remarkabley like yours. So a Russian name might be a good fit. How about Anatoly or Dimitri?

I name all my pets after somebody in Star trek so Kira and Dax come to mind as cats name Torres may fit but if I get a cat one day it would probably be Kira... or Spot like Data named his cat...

That is a cat that has Lived Life and Seen Things and as such positively demands a respectful name - no 'Kitty' names, please, nothing short of an ancient deity will fit, so we need to know: male or female?

You are absolutely right but I wrote HE doesn't have a name yet. So he is a boy about 9-10 months old and he already feels as if he lived in my house for ages - occupied my sofa and demands his food in the morning.

I second limajean's request about not giving a cat a human name. But how about something associated with the fur colour ? "Noir" or something like that?

I like the way your cat's eyes matches the sofa.

Cat suitable names, Ari and Ariel which mean lion and lion of God respectively. You might like Roland which was what my Dad's childhood cat was called.

I read every post very carefully I liked most of the suggestions, like Neo, Behemot (I like it myself), Bezdomny, Anatoly is not bad, Dimitry is even better, Marley, Pretzel (hmmm...), Kira sounds like a female name, Cassius, Ariel, Dumpeal... - nice, I like Muffin, but my daughter suggested Filemon.
I am afraid we keep searching. We were looking for a name for our Panteleimonas for a couple of months and while we spent some days in Greece, I sew a village - Panteleimon/Panteleimonas and immediately suggested to call our cat this name, she loved it too, so we need to find the name together, plus she found him, so she will approve the name.

I think Panteleimon is too complex for a pet. Imagine it: "PANTELEIMON! Get off the counter!" Too awkward. I say give it a human name. He looks like an Alex. If you're really against giving it a human name I suggest either Imbolc or Beltane.

You are correct we use the name PANTELEIMON when we want to stop the cat of doing something bad. BTW PANTELEIMON is a human name - Greek male name, believe it or not. When we want to talk nicely to him we call him: PANTI, PANTUSH, PANTLY, PANTLIKA, he knows all the names we use, thus we enlarge his word stock making him more intelligent ;-)

My daughter suggested Berlioz but we don't want his head to be cut by the tram.

I have spent thinking about names some time myself. So I can give some suggestions with a description of my choice. But it is only an opinion built upon how he looks.

Kwiksee-he reminds me with his golden yellow eyes of gold and it led to Quicksilver which was used as a chemical device for finding of gold during 19th century.
Pharoo-for me he symbolizes Egypt, and his divinity, apraising cats the combination of divine power and some atributes of their beings, cleverness and agility.
Creeper-his eyes would frighten me....in the darkness
Other suggestions-Daeno, Resembr,Custo,Ramsere,Farke,Quinte :)

Those names are maybe a bit crazy or easy, but I like them.
Mostly the last one.

Have a good time.

It may be a little bit nerdy, but what's about Schroedinger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schr%C3%B6dinger%27s_Cat)? Would make your cat immortal. Somehow.

First of all I would like to thank you for all suggestions I enjoyed reading all of them. However with my daughter we decided to call him Boris. He looks like Russian blue, plus he has that severe look in his yes like some of Russian men do. :-)
Besides he posses some qualities which the stereotyped Russian man does, I mean he is strong, muscular, handsome but not kind by nature at all, he is always fighting with the other cats.

Maximillian, this is the name my daughter picked for him. Over the years she has found perfect names for all of the cats who hang out at our house.

I just noticed you all ready named him; but if you want a second...

Olga4real

Thank you very much - maximilian is a perfect name, maybe if he hasn't had a name already I would call him maxim, I still need names for stray dogs, though.

well, I wanted to reply but it seems like you've already figured out what the cat's name would be. I was just going to say that I have 3 cats, and 2 of them have different names than what we had decided on initially. We adopted 2 from shelters and at the shelter they give the cats names. One cat was named Kate at the shelter, and she is still Kate. That name suits her I guess.

The other two cats were here a while and we called them a variety of things. The names they go by at the vet are not their names. As we got to know the cats more and saw more of their personalities, we realized that the names we selected don't suit them at all.

Shalot,
All my cats are street cats and the last one was adopted from the street that's why he didn't have a name. We do the same - we watch them for a while before we find out a proper name for each.

yeah, that's what I gleaned from your posts. I was just saying that's the way it happened with my cats.

I love the idea of giving a cat a human name! I suggest names like Brian, Sarah, Stephen, or Emily. That would be sweet!

I got my cat from a shelter about 4 years ago and her name was Honey which I didn't care for. She was 3 years old at the time and I wondered if she would take to another name. I decided to call her Milly and she took to it straight away; whenever I called her in from the garden she responded immediately. I think animals names should be fairly simple and not like a woman I met with a cat in a basket who told me that the cat was called Augustus.

How about "Meow"?

One of my cats I got off the street and named him Tobey. My other cat was a bit of an indulgence on my part and I got him from a breeder (He's a red Oriental short hair tabby) for reasonably cheap (he has a flaw, broken tail at birth), he's named Casey.

I don't get why people don't give human names to animals. I hate those cutesy pet names, human names give them some dignity ;)

Our cats are called Baldrick (after the stupid servant of Blackadder) and Emma. Also in the running were Mr Tibbs and Miss Moneypenny, but my husband didn't like them and Lucifer adn Belzebub.

We thought our Baldrick was a little bit doolaly because he couldn't jump up on the windowsill properly until we discovered that in fact he had a problem with his hip, so he couldn't jump well enough... Still he is now still called Baldrick, sometimes Baldie-waldie and stuff like that.

Emma also goes with Emma-lemma and Emma-lemma-lina (which she definitely likes).

Our cat-family is called after hard drinks and spirits. Ours are really the only exceptions. So we called two of the little ones we gave away (beautiful white) Prunelle (after the Belgian spirit) and one Chiraz (after the grape). Then there was one relative of our cats called Batida (after Batida de Coco), one Pinot (after the grape).

We thought a funny one would be Johnny Walker or Merlot.

How about "Meow"?

The problem with 'Meow' is that, while it is supposed to be an onomatopoeic representation of what a cat says, it is far from the mark in actuality. I spend a good deal of time in conversation with my cat and 'Meow' doesn't enter into it.

I have several cats and they have several different kinds of names. Some are human, like Lucy; my favorite is my Siamese cat, Tips, whose kind of like Boris, very macho and kind of a bully really. He bites.

Is your new cat a boy or a girl? If the last I think Mindy might be cute.

I would like to express my gratitude to all people who posted their suggestions. Too bad that one cat needs only one name.
SoonerSoul, Muffin is funny,
HipHopAvenger, Pharoo and Creeper - I like them.
JuniperWoolf Nevermind is original too - I like all of them, however Nevermind doesn't sound good in Hungarian.
From time to time I go to a local dog-shelter to help with walking and feeding stray dogs - we always need new names for dogs, I if you let me I will use some of these names for dogs. I hope nobody will kill me for using cat's names for dogs, will you?
