Today I had a look at the Terry Pratchett books at the library... This summer I would like to read some of them:

Some of them are in Discworld series, I think. Do they need to be read in any particular order?

Any suggestions, comments are appreciated! :)

The Good Omens is anon-discworld book, and is quite fine.

The Colour of Magic starts the series, we think, but, please, do not read it first. It is one of Terry Pratchett's blow-ups. The whole serie where the protagonist is Rincewind is really not good. We would actually avoid it, but since it is sort of a introductionary book, then..., nah, still, don't start with it. You know what they say about first impressions.

Night Watch is really at the end, and it might be difficult to understand, since it is the end of the Watch series.

We'd recommend Guards! Guards! as a strating book. The Watch series starts there and, though there are about four books between it and NW, where the Watch evolutionates, but of your listed books We think that NW could come after GG.

But wouldn't you want to start with some other Pterrys work? We find "Mort" quite good, where Death takes an apprentice leaving him his scythe and Pale Horse (named Binky) and his work.

I've only read Good Omens. (Got distracted halfway through Colour of Magic and never bothered finishing it.) It was quite fun. Totally irreverant. Thumbs up.

This website http://www.ie.lspace.org/books/reading-order-guides/the-discworld-reading-order-list-v1-25.txt advises on a reading order. Reading them out of order doesnt really cause a problem (I did it, but then again I read Harry potter backwards as well) Start with Guards! Guards! and probaly you should just finish the City guard series that way it is easier to keep track of who is who.

As for the Colour of magic Id already read 7 or 8 pratchett books when I got to it and it still seemed like a very wierd (not nesseraly in a bad way just a little unestablished if you like) book and it really needs a background knowledge of Discworld to halfway enjoy!

Yes that is oone of his better books but I dont think you should start with it because I seem to remember it had quite a few "in-jokes" and I think you should really save the death trilogy up as it is just so good.
Try starting with Pyramids its sort of unconnected so you cant miss anything.
Anywho no matter what you choose enjoy it!

Terry Pratchett's
I laughed so much last night! No idea what I was thinking! Terry Hatchett is a mixture of these I guess:

I am hoping to read these particular books because they are in BBC's Big Read (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3711&highlight=BBC%27s+Read) list. Thank you everyone for their suggestions! :)

the rincewind series isn't good? baloney old bean, rincewind's the best

as for night watch being the last watch book- since when? i hope it isn't but then again i suppose pratchett has to do something new. night watch is probably the best discworld book as its the most dark and dramatic of the books with little slapstick humour and a lot of righteous moralising on society. but frankly the one off books like pyramids, small gods and the truth are also excellent ways to be introduced to the series and those three are actually bloody brilliant reads. enjoy pratchett! but avoid his "kids" books, they're so not funny and really really dull.

Truth which one was that?? Ohh is it the one with the dwarfs and the printing press?
Humm actually I think that if it was the one i think some of the City watch turned up in it.

yeah but just because vimes and angua showed up didn't mean that it's a city watch book, they were just bit players. the main character was that reporter guy, otherwise every book would be a death book just because he shows up in each one.

go luggage!

I finished reading my third Pratchett book (first Hogfather and Mort... Now, The Colour of Magic). I have to admit that the books are somewhat entertaining but it is too much effort to get to learn all those new things about this fantasy world and countless new characters. It is like having to learn a new language just to be able to read a few books.

I like the Rincewind character though I have not read the others yet.

Hmmm, i think his best are: Soul Music and Thief of Time. They are my favorites from thew series for Death. I think this serie is the best one. Otherwise really like Small Gods.

Personally I've always preferred the books about the witches. I'm a definite member of the anti-Rincewind camp; I read the first book in the series and was convinced that I disliked Terry Pratchett, when in fact it was just Rincewind I found tedious. I agree that the Death books are also good

Here are the Pratchett books I am planning to read:

Guards! Guards!

Men At Arms

Night Watch

Reaper Man

Small Gods

Soul Music

The Fifth Elephant

The Truth

Thief Of Time

Witches Abroad

Wyrd Sisters

Good Omens

Now that I look at them like this, there are far too many of them! :eek2:

As I mentioned in my earlier post:
Oh, I could not notice it. The title, Mort, is very brief. :D
