Yeah, you should learn, though that is a rather basic way to hold them - I generally like to hold them closer, on a different angle, and from the back (though, I always use the long plastic ones which don't have pointed tips.

My two closest friends are Chinese and Korean. Using chopsticks was virtually a prerequisite. Luckily my Jewish friend is as non-practicing as possible. He hates Gefilte fish and loves bacon double-cheeseburgers and ham and cheese on rye.

I've had many friends try to teach me, but alas! i'm far too clumsy :(
So I just use my fork. Or for sushi, my hands

I know you should hold them almost at the ends but I found it easier to hold them nearer to the 'business end'. After a month in China, I was quite proficient though I thought I would never get the hang of them at first, despite tutorials from our couriers.

Ive tried sticks about 30 times, but i cant handle it!
