Inspired by my first day at my summer job. Boy, am I tired, but in a good way.

A First Day on the Farm

I worked on the farm today,
As a part of a well oiled crew.
It was my first day, and they weren’t friendly.
The rhythm, the pace, the pressure,
It rained all day.
I stood, squatted, and kneeled through it all.
I was free and I was happy,
Nature was my oppressor
And I complained.

Weeding the rows,
Pick, pick, pick,
Double fisted style, oh yah!
Behind me was a wake of seedlings, pushing through the fresh dirt,
Their protector and keeper.
I know this job well.

I had a love affair with a strawberry.
The farmer said, “Throw it away!”
No, I identified its raw beauty, although physically flawed.
As only I could do.
Ruby red, ripe, and dripping
It was supple and soft
Strangely, the juice from my bite sprayed me and the patch.
I told it I loved it for a second, but it didn’t reply.

Yellow and slender,
Summer squash is a perfect fruit.
The rain drenched everything,
But I found an umbrella under the leaves.
In this green microcosm, I searched for the perfect one.
When I had a basketful, I guess he was in there somewhere.
I had pulled him, but I had pulled a lot.
The variety was outrageous, but my answer was absolute to only one.
He would be my dinner. Yummy!

My body is tired now, but my mind is satisfied,
Only in the way that physical labor can leave one feeling content.
This is the way we are supposed to feel.
Our natural state, even if only for a day.

Beautiful. I feel in touch with nature, too, now, although I live in the city. Thank you.

Thanks for the reaction. You couldn't believe what this work is like. Physical labor is horrifically tedious. I'm not use to this kind of physical demand for 8 hours. But I can do it and will continue to do it.

My husband though the love affair with the strawberry was particularly amusing. I told him I was very disappointed when it wouldn't aswer me back.

peace! jersea
