Just being curious. Before anyone here (me) dies of old age I thought it would be fun to entertain suggestions as to where (geographical location, specific site, etc.) we should get together for our own version of a garden party. Antartica? China's vast desert? Somewhere in the vast rainforests on an ecological reserve? The corner pub in downtown Zimbabwe? The floor is open......

The floor is open......and we are to fall through it to the other side of the world where our fellow literati await? ;) didn't Tik-Tok of Oz do that to great effect, as well?

never been to a rain forest; nice idea as long as the local bugaboos and snakes stay clear. or p'raps Cornwall?

Should it not be literary in nature? My vote is for:

http://web.bilkent.edu.tr/Online/www.english.upenn.edu/jlynch/Frank/Gifs/diodati.gif

The Villa Diodati

Or:

Why am I even participating in this thread? It's not like I'd be invited or anything.

Hungary!

Never been to a Starbucks tho, maybe I've never even seen one *wonders*...I guess I can do without tho.

Any place can be good as long as the company is good as well.

Though it better not be raining...

baddad

Uh....yeah.....provisio....: Not MY house. It would be waaayyyy too much fun, and I'm not sure this younger crowd could handle that! Besides, I want to travel, and I've been to my house before, want to go somewhere NEW.........(not starbucks) ....the amazon sounded nice, Tintern sounded nice, Sher's house would be nice, Helga's location would be FANTASTIC (Iceland)...........We could meet at Basil's, Basil's invited, but his avatar suggests he lives beside the road along with a tall, well dressed rabbit and we all know rabbits can be dangerous........

Koa

you live 1140 metres above the sea level? quite high, uh?

isnt Villa Diodati the place where the Shelley couple was with Byron when Mary Shelley started Frankenstein? Or am I really confused? If it is, let's all go there!!!

Ditto to MOno's literary-themed meeting point.........

http://shelley.bump.us/trip/June1/buckingham%20palace.jpg

I am sure the Queen would be only delighted to open her humble abode to us! :p

Warning: Don't be deceived by the clear, bright sky. It happens once every 3 years.

Well, we have the Agricultural Hall of Fame... and we have wide open spaces and blue skys in which to discuss literature.....and we have corn...and we have.......uuummmmm I'll be back. oh got another one, Hemingway worked here for a few month on the newpaper.....

No camping please...I don't like insects, I don't like tents much and despite not being social I need something vaguely resemblant to a city...more than 48 hours in a place where nature rules, no houses, no pollution, no streets causes troubles to MY stability.

Hey! The compromise: any Northern Italian city on the week of the 15th August: city-like, but EMPTY. Only troubles: hellish temperatures, tropical humidity, and thousands of (burnt and halfnaked) German and Japanese (unburnable and unnakedable...invulnerable) tourists ...

Speaking of Italy, I currently reading a book by Paul Theroux (sp), Stranger at the Plaza D'Oro...or something (I kinda forgot). It describe the place in Italy, some where quite near to Sicily I suppose, where D.H Lawrence once spent his days when he got sick...From the description, the place seems very beautiful...

Cozumel, Mexico. Tropical Island, 28degrees C., crocodiles on the golf course, sea tortoises nesting in July, a library where everything is in Spanish, lots of history, archeological sites, Mayan ruins..............cheap beer, cheap food........one of the most famous reef diving spots in the world (made famous by J. Cousteau in 1961) and yet little development to ruin its beauty......situated off the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula (where the BIG meteor hit, wiping out the dinasaurs, evidence of meteor strike still being unearthed today)....23 degrees north latitude, 86 degrees longitude........

Yes, we Canadians know our beer. But we never mix beer and donuts. Beer is for parties, inducing sexual attraction, an excuse for a barbeque, a must at all major sporting events, concerts, naked screaming rock'n'roll backyard get-togethers, hottub parties, apre skiing, golf, etc.

I was in a Literary Society during university. It was a fantastic group that did all sorts of random and literary sorts of activities. Poetry readings, debates, parties where you had to dress up like your favorite character... totally ridiculous!

For our formal party at the end of my last year, we managed to get invited to our advisor's home. Everyone had to bring something to read. It was incredible the diversity of things people chose! It was supposed to be something reasonably short, and that was the only guideline. We had poetry, bits of dialogue from plays, excerpts of short stories or novels, a couple jokes, one news report, a few paragraphs from the Aenead read in Latin... it was really wonderful.

I think we should do that on our cruise! :)

Helga
05-17-2005, 07:37 PM
well, I think I should bring Icelandic beer, being the only one here who lives on the ice. How about Viking and Icelandic vodka, very good, stong stuff.

The good thing about being on a boat is if you need to throw up, just aim for the sea...

Hahaha this reminds me, I never was too good at acting as a chaperone. When I was in the B.B (boy's brigade kinda similar to scouts), I was put in charge of 6 unruly terrors (aged around 13) when we went camping in the highlands one summer. Needless to say things didn't go too well, they annoyed me once too often and I tied them to a tree in the woods (don't worry no particularly vicious animals around) while I went out one night.

hmmm, if we were to hold it, it should be on something like the easter islands, or on a boat in the midle of the bermuda triangle, or that place with the giant desert sand drawings...

or isla nublar... :D

seriously, I would suggest (if this were to theoretically happen) stonehnege, the giza pyramids, or lasvegas

Nightshade
06-16-2005, 04:17 AM
Sorry but take it from someone who could see them from classroom window the Giza Pyramids are OUT!
1- They are dark and you have to bend double to get in them ( and Im am less than 5 foot high!)
2) There is the Oxygen problem plus they dont like alot of people talking inside because they are afraid the sound waves will knock the thing over!
3) If you mean the Platuo it smells of camells and Horses and all th people not used to the heat would end up in hospital with heat/sun stroke!
You could however hold it in a hotel and just go and visit the pyramids

Im going to Stnonehenge as my 18th birthday present from my mum... Ill go into the inner circle and touch the stones :D :D

We have three gorgeous lakes, green everywhere, SilverStar mountain with a small city way up there and a million things to do summer and winter. We have the army here on the top of the hill just going out of town and we can all sit and watch the artillary fire(they have hit some of the houses-not really good). Okay forget it, then how about we all show up at Mono's house in Portland. And if anybody gets sick he can take perfect care of us. Other than that I give up. At least somewhere where their is no war at present and none of us is wanted for anything major, I hate jail parties.

Been to NZ and agree it's a beautiful country with very friendly people. But I must submit my vote for Hawaii -- island chain of balmy torch-lit nights, hula girls, bathwater-warm ocean lagoons teeming with sea life, sugarcane fields, rainforest waterfalls and the most active volcano on earth.

We could sit on the blowhole rock where young author James Jones gazed at the ocean horizon and came up with a great title for his novel -- "From Here To Eternity." Or lay down quickly on our campfire cot in the jungle and comment, like Mark Twain, that a million mosquitos will never bite another human. Or visit the $2 million beach mansion on Maui where "writer" John Saul cranks out his wildly popular swill fiction.

Free diving, I once saw a huge "rock" move underwater a short distance from me. Then I noticed the rock had a large eye. It was a humpback whale sleeping in 20 feet of water and I woke it.

Nightshade, you dont have to go too far north to see the lights all you need is to get a clear night away from the light produced by cities and towns. If you went to Scotland you'd be able to see it from there.

I have more sense than to jump off a perfectly good bridge the locals do however. A picture of the bridge is here (http://www.coulouris.net/george-jean/tandemscotland2001/day5/Carrbridge%204-pp.JPG) you have to be careful as the only deep part is right under the bridge...too many rocks at the sides.

He is called Harley the Bruce and is very regal and beautiful and has a great strength and beauty of spirit. My adopted brother is from the clans of Douglas and the clan of the Mathew. I'd go to Scotland tomorrow if I had the time. Tell me can you get there on twenty eight dollars and six cents-Canadian?

I have more sense than to jump off a perfectly good bridge the locals do however. A picture of the bridge is here (http://www.coulouris.net/george-jean/tandemscotland2001/day5/Carrbridge%204-pp.JPG) you have to be careful as the only deep part is right under the bridge...too many rocks at the sides.
What holds the bridge up? It looks about 8 inches thin at the center -- as if you would fall into the stream (instead of jumping) when it collapsed.

But if we have a boat we can stop at hawaii, yes? *hint, hint* can yo u go far eo\nough north in a boat to see the northern lights???
No northern lights anywhere near Hawaii, but we have the green flash (see Island Life post.)

I saw the aurora borealis growing up in Michigan and also during my 3 trips to Alaska in recent years. Pretty spectacular, I must admit.

Jakobin, sounds very entertaining indeed...

Baddad you should have included a poll...we're like a big family filled with kids, each with his/her own choice of place to visit

I think I saw it once, but I may have been stoned. I can't remember.

One nimrod thought it was caused by the hot sun touching the cool ocean water as it sank beneath the horizon. A steam flash, so to speak. He was stoned, too.

i originally thought that it was the sun light going through the water and because most sea water is a greenish colour, the light shone through the water and caused a green light.

i lived in holland at the time.

when...i reckon in about 5 years when we have finally figured everything out. if its going to be in new zealand, then everyone can come tomorrow, we can rent buses (looking at the membership now, probably about 20 or 30 for the actual active users who will actually show up). haha imagine the sight, 20 or 30 buses driving around new zealand full of people that met on the internet talking about literature! id love to see it happen.

so yeah, see you all in wellington airport tomorrow morning, 7am sharp? maybe we will see Trolly and his aussie troll companion!

I was actually thinking that as I walked to work yesterday and it occured to me that we probably have to wait a few years so that everyone can save some money oh and people like Master Bong and Jack are old enough to come along.

That would depend on how much faith you have in duct tape....$28.06 should be enough for one of those inflatable, floating seats and a roll of duct tape to repair the holes as you try to float there....just watch out for changes in current :D .

With regards to when, not until I get my citizenship through (dont want to leave the country then have the canadian govt realise their mistake and not let me back in)

Okay, enough fooling around. I'm going to Mexico this April. I spent five months there last year, and I want to go back for a month. I'm not particular as to where, but the pacific coast is nice, might try that. Any takers. I'll buy the first20 rounds......

Only if we stay in Yelapa or San Blas, the two best seaside villages on the Pacific coast. There's raicilla (Mexican moonshine) in Yelapa and cheap boiled shrimp and Pacifico beer in San Blas.
