Im just getting into writing, this is my first short story. I was hesitant to post but thought, what's there to lose right? Thanks for reading! :)
Part One
I was in my car when I heard the news. The voice of the president broke in over the Misfits song Halloween, so fitting now that I think of it. First I thought it was a prank, like The War of the Worlds when it aired on the radio in the 30's, but the panic sank in.
I took my exit. Instead of heading home, I went towards the radio station. My friend Lucy works there as a reporter. People were rushing, panic on their faces. "This cannot be happening!" I said aloud to my invisible passenger. When I got to the station's building I ran to the door but it was locked. I fumbled for my phone and called Lucy. " Hello?" Answered Lucy in a shaky voice. "Its me, Im outside the station, its locked! Are you in there?" "I'll be right down." The bolt snapped in the door, it flew open and I rushed inside. "Is it true, zombies?!" She grabbed my hand, and we started to head up the stairs. "Yes Jack, its true."
The station was in an old brick building that had served as a brewery when the city was young. There were no windows on the bottom floor, one reason I came here. The other reason, the main reason, was Lucy. Lucy is trully beautiful, theres nothing fake about her. She stopped infront of the door to the second floor and stood staring out the window. Her long, untammed hair shimmered in the last of the suns rays. I looked into her eyes and saw strength that I felt reflect back into mine. We stood there like that for a moment.
As we walked into the main lobby I saw a couple sitting on the couch watching an infinite loop of the emergency broadcast. "Jack this is Lee and Elani." I reached out to meet Lee's hand, it was rough, his grasp was firm. Elani greeted me with a friendly hug. Lucy had mentioned Lee, hes her boss. Hes a dedicated journalist of high respect. "I wonder how many politicians and their wallets the zombies have eaten." Lee says with a crooked smile. A feeling of excitment sparks inside me. I look at him and say, "This, my friend, is going to be hell of an adventure."
We decided we would all stay the night there. The building is brick and metal, It is well fortified for a zombie invasion. I was sitting on the couch with Lucy and Elani while Lee paced around the room. His eyebrows were drawn in, a crease marked his forehead. He had been in deep thought a while, we were all entertained watching his routine facial expressions: deep thought, anger, and that ah hah face. Around and around he went until finally he spoke. "We need guns." He said nonchalantly like he was adding it to a grocery list. "And explosives." Lee is a tough looking dude. There are slight lines around his eyes and on his forehead from the many hours he has spent passionatly uncovering the many truths and injustices that are hidden from the people. I couldn't have asked to be in this situation with a more formidable ally.
Elani sat on the couch unmoving. She seemed to be completely impenetrable like it was just her body there and her essense was off doing other things. Her eyes were fixed out a window, I dont think she even blinked. When Lee spoke her eyes were on him in an instant. The shell she was a moment ago was no longer hollow. She had a sort of aura of wisdom about her. She stands and walks over to a desk, opens a drawer and pulls out some bonoculars which she uses to look out a window on the west side of the building. Its dark out but the street lights illuminate a sporting goods store five blocks away. "There's an outdoor supply store there, they sell guns and other supplies we'll need to survive. We should go, tonight." We all go over to join her at the window and make a plan.
Part Two
From the window I could see people running around, looting. There was someone laying on the ground close to the building, he was badly injured, and twitching. Grief struck me, "That man is still alive.. And Suffering!" I gasped. Jack, Lee, and Lucy came to see what had inflicted such pain in the heart of their ally the man jumped up wildy, looked around him, looked up at the sky and released a spine numbing howl that sounded as if it came from the deepest depths of hell. He ran towards the crowd. We watched in horror as the zombie grabbed a women and bite into her neck! BANG! A man wearing camo pants and combat boots with ammo strapped around his shoulders shot the zombie right in the head, brains, chunks of skull, and blood covered those near by. "We go now," I said. Luckily Lee had a small display of weapons he had collected in his travels. I went and took the machete off the wall, the others followed suit. "One person must stay to lock the door behind us." Lucy said she would stay, "Dont forget walkie talkies, and batteries lots of them, get some backpacks, and as many containers for water as possible."
Jack took Lucy in his arms, he kissed her. The hardest thing hes ever done was let go and walk out that door. She locked it behind them and raced upstairs to watch threw the window. They hurried down the street, ducking behind cars. As they approached the store, an erie silence crept over the whole area. Barely anyone remained in the streets after seeing that zombie. They walked up to the door and it slide open, the music still playing over the speakers. They headed strait for the gun counter. After deciding they would all use the same kind of gun Elani loaded a backpack with the appropriate type of ammo.
I was behind the gun counter standing guard. I had sent Lee and Jack to get the supplies. The cash register was in front of me I pushed a button and the drawer popped out. It was full of cash. I pushed it closed. Something fell off a shelf near bye, "Jack? Lee?" No answer, I heard footstep. Cautiously I slide out from behind the counter, flipped the safety off my gun and went towards the sound. I peeked down an aisle, nothing. I ran to the next and peeked down it. That man in combat boots was there, viciously tearing threw first aid kits. I stepped out, gun pointed at his face, "What are you doing here?" I demanded like this was my store. He looked half cravy, his eyes were fully dilated, he was standing in a pool of his blood. "Get out of here girly." It sounded as if a demon was trying to escape with the words. Suddenly he took a few sharp breaths struggled and fell. I ran to him, his eyes were wide open, he had no pulse. I said, "Rest in peace." and closed his eyelids. They flew open again, I fell back in horror. The man shot up like a bolt, his wild eyes on me. I jumped up and grabbed my gun. He came towards me, I shot him in the chest. He continued towards me unphased. Again and again I shot, unloading my clip. This monster continued towards me not even noticing he was full of holes! I saw my machete and ran for it. The zombie tackled me right when I reached it, I swung around and lodged it threw his throat. He froze and looked into my eyes. His returned to normal; they were filled with fear and confusion. He slumped onto me in heap, I felt for a pulse, nothing. I closed his eyes once more, confident this time they wouldn't open again.
