When I read this play I couldn't notice anything.

It's about Ivanov's inability to actually like anything - he has the Jewish wife, who he refuses to love, meanwhile refusing to admit to himself that he did actually marry her to try and get her families money - he later gets the new opportunity, but pities himself so much, that he cannot move on, realizing that in truth, he is just a sad, vain egotist with nothing real to offer the world.
