I just learnt that within 200 yards of the flat where George Orwell wrote 1984 there are 32 CCTV cameras!

That has totally shocked me! I am listening to a BBC radio 4 programme talking about privacy, and apparently the UK has 20 per cent of the amount of cameras there are in the world.... this is just crazy!

And what makes it sad is that if George Orwell saw how it's turned out now, this big brother state, he would be so shocked that it's us that's mainly brought this about, a lot of people want them there....

Just thought people might be interested in what I have learnt today :)

Yes, I've heard reports of hysterical laughter coming from the direction of Orwell's grave.

Even though it is ironic and highly controversial, I do not share the public paranoia about CCTV. Yes it can potentially infringe on people's freedoms and such, but if you do not commit crimes how exactly does it affect one on the personal level? These CCTV's cant look in the windows and see what you are doing at home, so seriously what's the problem?

I see this whole debate being blown out of proportion. The only potential flaw I see with this system is that if ever the power is seized by a totalitarian leader, then this whole system can be greatly abused, however, with current government it is unlikely that a law abiding citizen will feel threatened.

But what is next? Where will surveillance come after square's, subway etc? In Telescreens so any in-flat (new word!) crimes can be stopped? When it once starts, there is no turning back.

Well, they already do have the technology to see through walls, so why would they need to install cameras in all houses? LOL, seriously though, if they are out to get you, then you cant really hide - you are done pretty much, even in todays society.

So yah.

Not really. A small amount of thermal imaging data isn't "seeing through walls".
