After reading a news article, I wonder if our Forum members would agree with the survey results... Please vote for the invention you consider the best.

Also:

*What piece of technology would you most like to see invented?

*Which technology would you most like to disinvent?

PS: I am including the options available in the survey.

I could really use a teleportation device. Anyone got anything in the works? *sad, long-suffering, stuck-on-the-wrong-continent sigh*

Jay

Definitelly that, Snukes. Anything from Scotty-beam-me-up to transportation rings :p to running out of phase... anything that gets you wherever you want... in about up to 3 minutes :D

Some kind of chocolate which would help you burn fat;thus, the more you eat, the slimmer you get!

I sometimes wish mobile phones could be uninvented.

Invention I'd most like to see invented: My design for seperating coloured glass to be recycled.

Invention I'd like to disinvent: Nuclear weapons

*with regards to the poll, I have not voted yet because I am unsure of what exactly the question is about: What invention has benefitted the world most? or What has been the most significant invention?

BENEFITTED: Penecillin

MOST SIGNIFICANT: Nuclear bomb

Can one of our more scientific minded friends explain what a 'electro-magnetic induction ring' does?

Oh my god...exactly MY thoughts!
We all lived fine without mobiles, now we just have one mor thing to be slave of...

As for the options in the poll, I'm deeply in doubt between internet and the radio...

I used to have a personal chart of best inventions ever, which were radio, jeans and pizza. :D You see, radio is in my chart, but that was before I had ever even heard of the internet... hence the doubt.

Can one of our more scientific minded friends explain what does a 'electro-magnetic induction ring' do?

Basically, it is the process which happens in electric generators; step-up/step-down transformers etc. allowing the correct voltage of electricity to be provided to homes;industry etc.

How bout condom and birth control?

The world might have more than 6 billions peoplew without them, or more people with HIV.

Disinvented... *is that a word*...........the internal combustion engine. The energy and resource drain, the ecological and climatological costs that this invention has spawned are mind boggling. In North America we designed our entire culture around it.....and are the poorer for it......

Oops, I voted for bicycle before I saw knowing the germ theory of infection; I love my bicycle, but not as much as I love good health without infection. :D
Hmmm, one piece of technology to 'dis-invent?' I cannot decide, but, perhaps . . . pardon me for seeming too political, but anything directly involving the production of nuclear war (not including the science behind it, for example, the research of Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer, etc.).

i would have to say radio and bicycle. not sure which particular one to choose on the poll!

i can live without a tv but not the radio. am honestly not sure i could exist without the diversity it brings, sundays at the met, hip-hop, r&b, the bbc, npr, pri, blues, classic rock, classics, prairie home companions, cooking shows. i love the radio.

and bicycles - well, you can ride them with friends, you can take them off road, they cost less than cars, are great for the thighs, great cardio workout, and oh, yeah, they don't emit pollution. won't even 'go there' re: oil.

hooray, bicycle!

A horse is better than a bicycle ;)

walking is even better: you don't risk to fall and being run over by a car (well ok, you do risk it anyway...) (and i was talking of bycicles not of horses :D)

Jay

Nah, I prefer riding (a horse, lol, not a bike) to walking (though walking next to one's horse isn't bad either... hmmmm... horses...)

Jay

Never heard about the dangerous animal a horse is? In the front it bites, in the back it kicks! :D

But I've never been bitten nor kicked... though I've been having very close encounters with the ground (and the fencing, lol) a few times :D... oh, and one in-foal mare stomped on my foot... and about 3 months later, so did her foal :D, adorable little thing :p

Yes Shires are magnificent horses, and they nearly became extinct in the 1960s (http://www.canadianshirehorse.com/readingroom.html)

I think the singer/musician Sting was quite active in helping to preserve the breed. :)

The invention of either a teleportation device or efficient virtual reality would be two I'd enjoy seeing invented sometime soon.

Disinventions are so silly, if you take them away people will only discover new horrible things to do in their place or just discover it all over again. As they say, if nature can produce it and man can manage it, it will get made no matter the consequences, sooner or later. If I had to disinvent something I'd say the stock market.

one disivention leads to ten inventions...In need, people got much more creative..

Yes, without stock market...we're back to the ground zero...

do horses bite?

Yeh, imagine what those teeth can do to you...

e-mail is a great invention... at work i always have to phone those students who have no emails to warn them about the things that our office communicate via email... if everybody had email i'd avoid lots of phonecalls (i'm shy, i don't like to call strangers... And I guess lots of work communication got so much easier with email...

Steam engine
V2 rocket engine
Electric telegraph
Stephenson's Rocket
X-ray machine
Model T Ford
Penicillin
Pilot ACE Computer
DNA double helix
Apollo 10 capsule

Although I could hardly imagine a bearable existence without my computer and my Internet, I chose the germ theory of infection. If it weren't for antibiotics, none of us would stand a chance to have this discussion, because very probably none of us would have ever been born, nor would have computers or the Internet :p

Then I want a time machine to go back to the past, warp everything I dislike and reshape it according to my own whims :p And a teleportation gadget too, and an armored spaceship with full payload to decimate the alien invading force that might be heading my way anytime :p

(I watch too much sci-fi, don't I? :svengo:)

From this list i'd go with Penicillin. Without penicillin i'd have died a long time ago from pneumonia.

GPS for cars - Learn to read a map.Oh, don't say that, please!

I have an in-built GPS in my car and it has made my life so easy.

PS: I do know how to read a map.
