What about if you start by defining the comparative literature itsef.. Then, you can move to the "conditions" needed for one to compare, like: the enough knowledge in the language and the culture between the two literatures he/she is comparing. Also, being neutral (unbised) is really important for one to compare, and not being easily dominated by certain idiologies that may ask him/her to fetch only for the defects..

I was a comp lit major in college. One of the hot topics a few years ago was if comparative literature can even be called a legitimate field. Kind of along the lines that Honest mentioned, can we really study only literature in a vacuum from a nation's culture? How is comp lit different from, say, "world" literature or ethnic studies?
Cross-national conceptions of narrative and genre, and the affect of Western literature and Modernism on the Chinese novel.
Or, you could just discuss a few poems from different parts of the world, and compare color symbolism and imagery.

I study compared literature too. You could write something about the influence of Edgar Poe in Russian literature, or you could draw your ispiration from Auerbach and keeping on his discussion about realism in Western Literature
Sorry for my bad english:)
