Would anyone be interesting in reading Capote's In Cold Blood together?

I've already read it but would like to discuss it.

I would but unfortunately I am bogged down. Just finished Kim today and started The Maltese Falcon. I do want to do Rob Roy if it wins and I still want to read Persuasion. And Janine and Quark are bugging me about Henry IV, Part 1. So I just can't.

I absolutely love Capote, but let me take the day to see if I have a touch of bronchitis before I commit definitively.

Definitely interested :)

I'll only have to get my hands on it... I could check my bookstore Friday. I'll look into it and let you know.

Edit I just had an idea: I might order it online... It takes about 7 days to deliver though!
Is 12 euro's (17 dollars) a reasonable price for this book in paperback? I really have no clue about book prices as I usually buy them second hand for at most 5 euro's...

I have also read it, but wouldn't mind discussing it with all of you. It's a great book. :)

Seems like I am one of the very few who hasn't read this one.

Anyway, I will be sending off my assignments on Friday and then will finish reading The Stone Diaries...

So, if anybody is interested, shall we say... June 10th for a start date?

It's the first true crime book. In 1959 in western kansas a family was found murdered in their home. The book talks about the family that was murdered but 90% is the story of the two men that were convicted of the crime. Truman Capote spend a good deal of time with the two men while they were in prison.

Ooh, I want to join in. I've wanted to read this for some time, but I don't think I can guarantee getting it read on time, particularly as I have to buy it first. There are so many books on my pile that I'd better not commit myself, but I will be interested in the conversation as I do want to read it as some point. I've read so many good reviews on it. It's funny but although I was aware of it for a long time, I didn't really take notice of it until relatively recently, believing that Capote was overrated. Judging by the reviews I've read it seems I was wrong, but you can all put me straight on his worth.

The good news Sche, is that I can get to the library in the bucket on a full charge. I found this out while meeting Virgil and Quasi for a long lunch, where upon they both informed me that I keep LN hopping:idea:.

Only too glad to oblige!;)

Virgil is a real sweetie too, and Quasi told me state secrets about LitNet!:lol::lol: (Anyone up for blackmail?):D

Awesome! That's so up my alley! I love true crime :) Thanks papaya

So are we supposed to hold off until June 10th to start reading, or is it cool to start before then?

You can start and read any time you want, of course.

Many have already read it, anyway.

Oh okay. I didn't know if we were going to read and discuss chapter by chapter. Will the true crime reading/discussions become regular on here? If so, I'd like to suggest a couple of good ones.

Sometimes we have a group reading of a book that have been talked a lot on the Forum but it is not genre specific.

Maybe you can nominate those in the Book Club when we are reading crime books.

I gave the (unread) copy I had to my daughter to read, so I've told her to join the forum and take part in the group reading. I'll get another copy in time for the start.

Oh good choice. I love nonfiction work that manages to get me on the edge of my seat. That book made my hair stand on end, although I admittedly am unable to get similarly interested in Capote's other work. :(

I read this book years ago and can attest that it's fine book. It had a great impact on me at the time; very disturbing, too. I don't think that Capote is over-rated at all wessexgirl. This book was his masterpiece and I do believe it also ruined him; not sure he ever wrote a novel again after this one. Did you see the film "Capote", about this part of his career? He became quite obsessed with the one prisoner and the murder. It's not a pleasant read because they go into the actual murders quite graphically, so be forwarned, if this sort of blantant killing bothers you, I would not read it. I think by now most people are amune to these type dramas since the advent of all the crime TV series. I found it disturbing when I was young. It's a very good book though - very psychological.

I am of the same mindset as Virgil presently. I am too bogged down with other discussions. We just started a Chekhov short story today; I hope to revitalize an old thread, on Lawrence's Tortoise poems; I hope to begin discussion on Henry IV when we wind up the one on Richard II; add my own personal reading to this list and I am bogged down; oh, and also discussing "Phantom of the Opera" in the social group thread - 'On Broadway'.

I am sorry, Scher, I must decline on discussing this book for now, but I may pop in, from time to time, to see how your discussion is going or make a brief comment.

Scheherazade, I dangled consideration on this, and Capote is one of my favorite nearly out of the closet acerbic celebrity self-conscious authors of his generation, but I decided I did not need to delve back into his courageous psycho-sexual tensions for the time being.

I am rather despondent about my earnings potential right now, and I do not think attempting to take a page from Truman's playbook is going to help me any, although this isn't quite the reason I demur. It is a one of a kind work of non-fiction, however, and I hope you enjoy.

When will we start?

Lady in the library dug me out a copy today from the storeroom. It's a little worn...first issued in Jun 1973, but it's here and ready to be read. :)

I'll join! This book has been sitting on my shelf for years, and I keep "meaning to read it" but never have.

I have never participated in a group-read before - any details to share on the mechanics? (i.e., pacing?) Thanks everyone! Looking forward to the 10th :)
