So I walk by this toy shop every day going to work and they have this playmobile stuff in the window. Why the hell would a kid want playmobile? Lego is where it is at. Lego is educational & fun not to mention the cool lego knight monty python & the holy grail thing.
Playmobile is just blah to me. Now some of you will be thinking "kilted why you got such a hate on for playmobile?" That is an easy q - When I was 8 I wanted the lego pirate ship for my birthday, I was gonna enjoy putting it all together (was gonna pretend to be a shipbuilder like in the ship-yards in glasgow) know what I got? The playmobile version. Most disappointing birthday present ever. assembly was ten mins instead of the hours I had planned
So here we go Lego or Playmobile

I take Lego very seriously. I am not cognizant of any competing tool (to call them "toys" would be a disservice) that is capable of producing the breadth and depth of invention and creativity in people of any age.
I have to admit that my classical mindset doesn't have much room for admiring or praising the most recent iterations of Lego, e.g. StarWars, StarTrek, Indiana Jones, etc.
Though in that regard perhaps it may be said that Lego's ability to adapt and flourish throughout different cultures, economies, and wandering appetites is a testament to the foundational excellence and wisdom found in its basic essence, viz. creating form out of void via clicking and interlocking plastic elements.
Lego is the locus, the cynosure of developmental tools that provide both pleasure and profit. As such, no other competitor is even worthy of comparison.

meccano is like lego technic (had gears & moving parts)

 Meccano was the first thing that came to mind too - though I have played much more with lego.
I have to go for lego, but I might be influenced by the fact that I did not have playmobile as a kid. My friends did, and we could play grand with those when the idea was to create a story. However, when we wanted to build stuff we always went to my place :D I guess there is fun in both...
Ow, and those Fisherprice creatures :D Grand :)

I longed for a meccano set like a sickness.
My kids had Lego, I spent many hours "helping" them with it.
The sound of a bit of lego rattleing around in the hoover was the signiture tune of our house for many years.

I have to get involved when questions of Lego arise :D. Good to see you as well, kilted, and I'm also glad to see that you are still raising interesting questions on crucial topics in a provocative manner.

So here we go Lego or Playmobile
Definitely Playmobile. But we also had Lego; my brother also liked to put things together.
But Playmobile's much more fun from the start. The stories I made up while playing! My dear little ... eh .. American Indians! The tipi I couldn't quite put together (my real reason for not liking lego as much, I'm afraid. I'm terrible at putting anything together.)! My knight! My ghost!
.. I could go on forever!

I feel like legos allow the user to be a whole lot more creative.

I had neither while growing up (though I did have some sort of blocks loved playing with) but:
I feel like legos allow the user to be a whole lot more creative.I agree... Even today, if I get my hands on some, I cannot help trying to put them together to come up with something.
Legos are a'ight but Knex is where it's at ya'll.I agree with this even more... Love K`nex... They are awesome.
I feel that playing with Playmobil is like playing with some kind of doll's house or dolls (not that there is anything wrong with that)...
From a creative point of view, Playmobil is very lacking because they do not let you visualise and create different things.

So I passed that shop again today. I think I should make up a placard and protest against it something like "Down with Playmobil. Lego creates Problem Solvers" or something along those lines.
I also now have a solid mandate thanks to you good people.

It was Lego every time in our house for my brother, sister and me. It’s a tradition that’s continued with our own children. I even have a small scar above my lip from when my brother once threw a piece at me…I was a terrible tease, which reminds me of the beating I got from my mother with the Hot Wheels track for teasing my sister. We couldn’t afford a Meccano set at the time, which was probably lucky for me…Ouch!

Legos are the bomb! I love them! We had two different train sets, plus all sorts of others -- a stable, a rocky camping place, a police station, a pizza parlor, a house with a pool, a surf shack . . . one year over our Winter Break around Christmas, we set them all up around the train set, and it was like a while town! So much fun! When we took them apart, though, they got kind of mixed up, and they've never been the same since. =/ Although, recently, we just dumped them all in a big box together, which has led to some interesting hybrid creations. =)
Also, K'nex are pretty fun, I'll give you that. My bro and I built a 4-foot tall trebuchet for a physics project, and it was awesome! A technicolor siege engine, for sure! =D

I don't really know how to vote because we had both in the house. I loved lego (especially the huge pieces) to build things, but Playmobil was pretty good. The two sets that I remember vividly are the Cowboy and Indian set and the Knights. I LOVED their wine goblets. I always liked that the "wine" inside the goblets were different colors based on what they were drinking. :p Do they even have those in the sets anymore?

I LOVED THESE!!!! In fact, I had all 3 of those in the picture. I had the house, barn and zoo, too. The zoo was great. :D

Seriously, you had me literally clapping at the site of this!!! :D I had the treehouse!!! I thought about that after I posted but then I just decided to leave it out rather than edit it. :)
Wasn't there a way that they could "climb" the tree? Like an elevator? That is something that is a blur to me. I don't know if I am getting that confused with something else that we had here (which might be the FP Sesame Street playset).

Yes...I had that too...
Look at the little door with the circle in it. The door is the same shape as the opening in the upper part. I played with this toy for hours and hours.
But the little blue fireman did not go to this set. The little girl did.

We had two different train sets, plus all sorts of others -- a stable, a rocky camping place, a police station, a pizza parlor, a house with a pool, a surf shack . . . I had none of those... or maybe all of them: My Lego era was ahead of all those sets. We had only the basic blocks back then, and we built just about everything we could think of. I consider the basic Lego block to be the ultimate toy. :thumbs_up
