look how lazy i be! copy, paste, edit:
i think we should have a thread where we make up a short paragraph, story, or poem (any style) using the word of that day - any takers?
*yes i know i should make up the thread, but i want feedback and it's morning. have i mentioned mornings aren't fond of me nor i of them?
Not yet :p
Sounds like a good idea. Using the new word in writing (a few times ;)) should work for actually remembering it :)
Paragraphs, poems, stories, weekly fill- in-the-blanks pop quizes... Oh the possibilities! :brow:
Uhoh, fill-in-the-blanks? Does that mean... no, it can't... though Scher IS a teacher... but she wouldn't... would she?... nah... but on the other hand...
well, Scher, what do you have in MIND? ;) i'll post a snippet and start the fun:
Today's word serendipity
'Twas serendipitous that they enrolled at Oxford and fell in love studying Elizabeth, Browning, those two students from Finland and Beijing.
I can't remember what serendipity means, lol *looks it up again*
ah, out of coincidence? Is it what they're trying to say? "the lucky tendency to find interesting or valuable things by chance"

Virginia--The West
By Walt Whitman
1819-1892
The noble sire fallen on evil days,
I saw with hand uplifted, menacing, brandishing,
(Memories of old in abeyance, love and faith in abeyance,)
The insane knife toward the Mother of All.
The noble son on sinewy feet advancing,
I saw, out of the land of prairies, land of Ohio's waters and of Indiana,
To the rescue the stalwart giant hurry his plenteous offspring,
Drest in blue, bearing their trusty rifles on their shoulders.
Then the Mother of All with calm voice speaking,
As to you Rebellious, (I seemed to hear her say,) why strive against
me, and why seek my life?
When you yourself forever provide to defend me?
For you provided me Washington--and now these also.

..."So...," he wondered, "...we find a passage of some example of a written communication, poem, famous quote, something serendipetiously discovered, but we don't hold it in abeyance, but instead post it here as an example of the 'Word Of The Day In Use'. Is that correct?" he queried. "Or do we use it in a sentence of our own making?" Finished his interogation he glanced briefly around the room, realized he was talking to himself again........

but the walls, which are always listening (like the very good friends they are) answered him, "Why yes, you are exactly right!".

'Weintraub passed a hand across his bald scalp. "It's a dull tale," he said. "I've been to Hyperion before. There are no confrontations with monsters, no acts of heroism. It's a tale by a man whose idea of epic adventure is speaking to a class without his notes."
"All the better," said Martin Silenus. "We need a soporific."'
From Hyperion by Dan Simmons
OH... so the idea is to post a word of the day and then post the word in context here as well? As in, who posts word of the day posts also here? Ahem, someone's sloooow... but did I actually got it right the... nth :p time around?

Hmm, my understanding was that we could all post something using the Word of the Day... Not only the person who posted the word...
The only reason I keep posting is that amuse really wanted to get this thread going and noone else seems to be posting much... :)

ooh, thank you!
the sopoforic lecturer, bored with himself, painted birdies on his thums and wiggled them under the overhead projector in art class.
his students were not amused. :D

....LOL.......funny stuff amuse.....
Administering the soporific was easy, I simply dumped some into Steven Hawkins tea.
Ah, goody, now I know what this is all about :D
If you're insomniac and to solve the problem you wish to use a pill, make sure the light's on when you're looking for the soporofic, you wouldn't want to take the laxative instead... you'd be up for no sleep at all.

So, I have to use the word Soporofic in a sentance? When does the word change?
Everytime a new word a day is posted? Guessing only.
