*apologizes to Sindhu (where are you?) in advance:

The Far Pavilions and Trade Winds, both by M.M. Kaye.
Endless Love by Scott Spencer.
Wuthering Heights.

had to google for her name; i remember liking Kathleen E. Woodwiss. have you tried her stuff?

and it didn't make me cry, but i really enjoyed Love Me, Marietta by Jennifer Wilde. :thumbs_up.
it comes after Love's Tender Fury (but i read LMM first). haven't read the third book - didn't realize there was one. it's been a couple decades.

here's a review on amazon.com re: LTF: :)

"I have never enjoyed romance novels at all and so it was extremely surprising to me that this book appealed to me greatly when I read it over 26 years ago. I was a teen-age girl when I first read it and this book really made an impact on me! I really liked the fact that the heroine of the story was so independent and full of life"

I think that the love story running through 'Cannery Row' is beautiful; it's a romantic book. Is that the 'Endless Love' where he sets fire to the house? Seen the film - god is that a weepy!

It is a must. An dark obsession story, rather than a love story.

How about "The Scarlet Pimpernel," by Baroness Orczy. It's also been made into a movie and a musical, I think.

The Age of Miracles by Catherine MacCoun.

Think of the moral dilemmas a nun (who's considered no less than a saint due to her miraculous powers of healing) have to deal with when she falls inlove with no less than a libertine troubadour. The story takes place in Medieval England.

I didn't see the Richard E. Grant version of "The Scarlet Pimpernel," but I remember the old film with Leslie Howard. I just looked up the musical-- yes, there is one. I think I'll check out the DVD of the production this weekend.

Why it's so romantic-- the main character secretly saves French families from the guillotine, while maintaining a dopey alter-ego to hide his identity. His wife isn't very impressed with her clumsy husband, but she's in love with the unknown, mysterious hero. I haven't read the book in awhile, but I remember swooning.. :)

Another one that made me cry was, "Camille" by Alexander Dumas fils (the famous author's son). And the last 50 or so pages of "Les Miserables" got to me too.

Hi - I'd really recommend The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger it's absolutely brilliant, gripping and has me in tears every time I read it, in fact more each time I read it 'cos I know what's going to happen. Another great love story is Like Water for Chocolate (sometimes this is printed as Like Water for Hot Chocolate) by Laura Esquivel - another fantastic star-crossed lovers story.

Has anyone ever read a really good love story by a man? All the one's I can think of are by women authors.

I'm embaressed to admit i usually look to Jane Austen when in search of a lighter, more romantic novel. Shes really quite a good writer with a real talent for characterization and dialogue.

I loved Braveheart by Randall Wallace. The love story between William and Murron is so touching. And oddly enough I see The Lord of the Rings as a love story is many different ways. Not necessarily a romance, but there are aspects of romance(found mostly in the Appendecies "Of Aragorn and Arwen"). But there is a love between the main characters of the Fellowship that I find incredibly touching. It made me cry. But if you want a genuine tear-jerker, Sense and Sensibility is a really good one.
*to be clear, its the love of friendship. I for one deny the alledged "homoerotic overtones" some people cite. (those are people who have never loved anyone when it didn't benefit them)

Oh yes, Time Travellers Wife was absolutely wonderful. Brilliantly written. My copy right now is on loan to a fellow teacher and oh my I miss it! Although I am a literature fanatic and don't usually read fiction, it was one piece of fiction that I could not put down. I highly recommend it!
