I'm currently reading Les Miserables and have come to the chapter explaining Hugo's view towards monasticism. I can see he does not agree with it much at all. However, he said something along the lines of "ascetics and sages meet at a common center."
I'm a bit confused. Isn't monasticism a form of asceticism (albeit maybe extreme?). My question is: What exactly is Hugo's view of asceticism?
